Church what about this dont you get: “should have treated him with respect and been straight with him one way or the other.”

I’m not saying the Yankees needed to keep him. They could have cut him. Maybe they should have. But saying, “come to spring training and try out for the team with the rookies and we’ll see” is ridiculous. Considering what he did for the team it reflects a total lack of respect.

i have always liked and admired mr. rivera although i am a red sox fan. he just seems reserve and classy.

They knew very well what he was capable of doing and should have treated him with respect and been straight with him one way or the other. That’s what more the Yanks should have done.

I’m going to take two players, and show their stats over the last four years (one current, one retired):

Player A – .263/.346/.412 for .758 OPS (100 OPS+), averaged 14 HR, 65 RBI and 75 R a season
Player B – .276/.364/.483 for .848 OPS (123 OPS+), averaged 24 HR, 86 RBI and 73 R a season

One of those players half this board thinks should be run out of town and should never play another game for the Yanks, and the other should have been given another chance…

Here’s why this is wrong. If you remember, the Yankees didn’t cut him, or invite him back. Rather, what they did is told him to try out in spring training and audition for the team. Like a rookie. They knew very well what he was capable of doing and should have treated him with respect and been straight with him one way or the other. That’s what more the Yanks should have done.

Im a Red Sox fan who HATED it when Rivera came in to close the game!! WHY? Because he’s the greatest closer in the history of the game, not just the saves leader. He’s also a class act. In his first game after the Red Sox came back from 0-3 in the playoffs to beat the Yanks 4 straight, Rivera received polite, mocking applase at Fenway. He laughed and tipped his hat. That mocking applase turned into a standing ovation!! The game will miss him.

Because his idea of being about to “relate” to a professional athlete merely because he’s a pitcher is asinine. I pitched in little league many moons ago, does that mean I know what Rivera is going through? His other comments show he knows nothing about Rivera, so how does he know what Rivera thinks/feels?

Bernie is a classy guy, I have always held this against Cash.

He’s the best of a group and deserves all the praise one can muster. Think about it:
Robb Nenn – Billy Wagner – Hoyt Wilhelm – Bruce Sutter – Dennis Eckersly – Lee Smith – Goose Gossage – Trevor Hoffman – Rollie Fingers………608 saves and a 2.21 ERA? Are you kidding me??? He’s the best ever and its not even close. Good luck and God bless you Mariano.

when you have players like the core four and Bernie who delivered the championships
they get to go out like Royalty. I guarantee if you ask Yankee fans we feel that
Bernie didn’t have the opportunity to go out the right way, he was never afforded the farewell tour and Bernie is a classy guy, I have always held this against Cash. I have always said as much trouble as there is in nyc for these fellas to get into these fellas did it the right way and delivered.

What will this guy go after he leaves baseball. This decision will rip hi apart. Baseball isnt just a game its a passion. I can relate I am a pitcher as well.

I’m just curious how you can relate to someone who grew up in a poor fishing village in Panama, has donated millions to get churches built in his home country, and is the greatest closer (and possible post season pitcher) of all time?

Oh, and apparently he’s already discussed what he’d like to do after he retires:

Just watched the press conference. This man is 100 percent class. As a Mets fan living in the Bronx, I’ve been extremely envious of the Yankees for having Mariano (we had Benetiz, after all).

I hope he has a great year and enjoys retirement.
