"Mitch Williams was partially right that the best GM would be one with some playing experience."

No, he wasn't.

Small sample sizes apply, but TSN Executives of the Year since 2000 include Dave Dombrowski, Walt Jocketty, Dan O'Dowd, Andrew Friedman, Mark Shapiro, and Brian Sabean, none of whom (as far as I know from a cursory look) have professional playing experience. That's a pretty broad range of (perceived) sabermetric-friendliness.

I can go way back further than 2000, but I think the point has been made.

This situation has had reverb all week innthe DFW area. Daniels had to go on the radio to say the did not want Ryan to leave because the negative PR on Ryan being pushed out was too strong. Lets face it - Ryan is very well regarded here, and that's hard to fool with here.

Mitch Williams was partially rightvthatvthe best GM would be one with some playing experience. Sabermetrics cant do it all. And og btw, the pitching coach Ryan hired is pretty good. Potentially a manager someday, having been on short lists.

They also have some negative PR on a perception that Daniels did not do a lotbto improve thec team in the postseason.

Long story short, Ryan is still running the organization. That much must be reaffirmed. Otherwise, the owners had better be prepared for some serious push back.

(Ps - you gotta wonder if fmr POTUS Bush did some behind the scenes work here...being friendly with Ryan...would not surprise me.)
