Apologies if i double post, but i just posted in another thread and now it is saying i cant post without logging in, which i clearly am. So trying again. I think a deal gets done. The giants would lock up a good young player. Posey gets financial security and the mental boost that comes with knowing he is valued by his organization and this will help him recover both physically and mentally. Win win for both sides i think.

Typically, a player is under team "control" for the first six years of his career. For the first three years, the team can pay him whatever they want, based on league minimums and the team's own formula for service time in the Majors. The next three years, the player has more say in what he earns, and if he can't agree on a contract with the team, his salary is decided by an arbitration panel each of those years until he's eligible for free agency.

Each year, a small group (I think it's the top 1 or 2 percent of service time,) will be classified as "Super-Twos". These are the third-year guys with the most service time in the Majors. Instead of having to accept whatever the team offers them in their third year, they get to start the arbitration process a year earlier than the rest.

Often, you'll see a team wait to call up a hot prospect until June as a way to avoid his Super-Two potential. The difference between the third year league minimum (over half a mil,) and the 4-6 mil a player might get in the first year of arbitration has probably delayed a number of Major League careers. Some players, like Posey or Harper, were just too good to delay, and were called up with the team knowing they could be a Super-Two.
