Since we couldn’t hit for shit in the beginning of the season, we held leads by yanking the starter early as soon as there was a sign of trouble. I believe we had one of, if not the lowest innings pitched by starters last season. The bullpen was way over worked by seasons end and couldn’t hold a lead if their life depended on it.

The Pirate’s offensive problem last year was their team OBP of .304, which was barely better than NL-Worst Houston/Chicago at .302. They’ve got to kick that up at least 15 pts if they want that power to translate into better run production. With the Young pitcher coming up and the power in that lineup, a league average OBP could make them a true contender.

Nice looking team on paper. As a fan of a division rival I don’t with them much success but as a fan of a team that also had a long suffering fanbase I hope to hell Pirates fans have something to cheer about this year.

Good analysis, I would add the 2011 slide was due largely to injuries, which can’t be blamed on the manager. The farm system is also much improved, and they’ve made smart moves, taking both Burnett and Martin from the Yankees.

The future seems promising, especially with McCutchen signed long term. With possibly the best stadium in MLB and a winning tradition, the potential is in place for a special year. If not 2013, then the years ahead.
