I think he’ll definitely get a look in September, possibly before that based on how he does in AAA and if there’s a need in STL.

They’re definitely excited about him, Cards fans should be as well.

I caught a bits and pieces of it.

Miller looked great – totally in control.

Kelly looked out of sync, seemed to lack command and wasn’t missing too many bats.

I didn’t get to see the game….but looking at the box score it looked like Kelly got dinked and dunked to death….lots of ground ball singles. Like I said, didn’t see it, so I don’t know if they were seeing-eye 27 hoppers or laser shots that happened to bounce once in the IF.

I don’t think there’s anything else cooking (yet) at all, Adams has made the team and Descalso moves to supersub.

Garcia is slated to be the starting SS at Memphis with Wong at 2nd. Ryan Jackson has already been optioned and will serve a utility role there.

Beyond the infield, it seems as though today’s outing by Shelby Miller very well could’ve won him the 5th starter gig – he was outstanding while Joe Kelly basically stunk.

Yes, they will pay him something….but they are saving a lot more than $95K, they are saving closer to $1M.

Not for now. I think they plan on playing Kozma most days at SS, and Descalso playing it the rest….with Carpenter playing mostly at 2B and filling in at 3B (which Descalso can also do), with Adams as the backup 1B and Craig as a RF option when they want to get Beltran a day off.

Cedeno is a disaster. Garcia/Jackson would be a better fill in if it comes to that….and in the meantime you don’t have to waste a roster spot on them.

No one year contract is guaranteed. They do come with termination pay.

Artice IX – Termination Pay

B. Spring Training
A Player whose Contract is terminated by a Club under paragraph
7(b)(2) of the Uniform Player’s Contract for failure to exhibit suffi-
cient skill or competitive ability shall be entitled to receive termination
pay from the Club in an amount equal to thirty (30) days’ payment at
the rate stipulated in paragraph 2 of his Contract, if the termination
occurs during spring training but on or before the 16th day prior to the
start of the championship season. If the termination occurs during
spring training, but subsequent to the 16th day prior to the start of the
championship season, the Player’s termination pay shall be in an
amount equal to forty-five (45) days’ payment at the rate stipulated in
paragraph 2 of his Contract.

This news is curious, but it screams that another deal must be in the works. Descalso can certainly handle the position on a short term basis, but he is too valuable of a defensive replacement and or substitute for Freeze and Carpenter to be the only other option at SS.

Maybe they are counting on keeping Jackson, but he hasn’t been getting that much attention in Spring Training to warrant that decision. Garcia maybe, but it is hard to see how the Cards’ brass can expect such a young inexperienced guy to be one injury away from full-time duty. The Cards must have something else up their sleeve.

Cedeno’s contract wasn’t guaranteed. This moves saved the Cardinals about $1.15M.

Nah, it was a smart move. Cedeno is horrible. He isn’t average at anything. The Cardinals have two glove-first SS options in AAA that would be far better than Cedeno in the field and can’t possibly be much worse than him at the plate. Cedeno was a waste of a roster spot….now, if they could just find it in their hearts to cut Willingham….

This is about the time of year when severance pay teams owe for players on one year major league deals goes from 30 days to 45 days, so this saves the Cardinals about $95k.

Really weird move. Also this has to sting for Cedeno, he must have looked at Furcal’s injury situation as an opportunity. After playing pretty well, he must have been damn near shocked to get cut.

I bet he’s picked up right away. There are teams out there that might want some insurance at SS – NY, Boston, LA to name 3.
