Derek Jeter could DH on Opening Day

Mar 19, 2013, 11:32 AM EDT

New York Yankees shortstop Jeter sets up for a pitch during a MLB spring training baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Tampa, Florida

Mark Feinsand says:

Worth watching, as it may suggest that Jeter’s ankle is going to need a lot of rest this year. Which, as anyone who has had a broken bone before can attest, is entirely possible. Those things ache sometimes.

The practical implication of this: Eduardo Nunez in the lineup more often. Which, really, the much-depleted Yankees attack does not need. But you gotta keep Jeter in the lineup too, so them’s is the breaks.

Nunez better play well enough so that Cashman doesn’t entertain the notion of trading for Yuniesky Betancourt.

Jeter will be out there on opening day. Only a fool wouldn’t think so.

Between Gardner, Ichiro, and Nunez, the Yankees are going to have a ton of speed this year. Between Gardner and Ichiro they’ll have pretty strong defense, too. Nunez not so much on that one.

I think every athlete of note currently playing or soon to be playing in NYC is hurt now. Why should Derek be any different?

I don’t think Nunez (hands of stone) is a good idea at ss, I would go with Nix instead, at least he can catch and throw the ball.

Nunez anywhere on the field is trouble.

Maybe Girardi can be persauded to let him play for, let’s say, a nice gift basket?

that gift basket joke is dead.

    “Those things ache sometimes”

guess today is sometimes, he was scratched today for soreness.

    oh boy

It’s probably just that the Red Sox’s opening day starter is likely to be Lester so it’s not like Hafner needs to start.

I hope his ankle hurts so bad that his butt gets sore.
His range may finally be measurably less that topiary.
He will be the first potted plant to be in the hall of fame.
He may have a species of deck shrub named after him before then.
    Yankees, finally,,,, hahahahahahahahaha

I know I’ll get hammered for saying this (at least 50+ thumbs down, ha ha), but why not shift Jeter over to first base?

Look, everyone, even Yankee diehards have to admit the obvious; Jeter is an awful SS. Coming off of his injury at his age can only limit his already extremely limited range. Nunez is a much better option at SS at this point.

Besides being at first may allow he to play in more games this season; even extend Jeter’s career.

Yankee fans, what would rather have:

    a) Jeter remains at SS; doesn’t break Roses’ hit record?
    b) Jeter shifts to 1B; extends his career and becomes the all-time hit leader?
