I understand your concern that the USA didn’t have their top guys, but that is how this competition is! Sadly, the top dogs are not all able or willing to play. But, mind you, that this was not only the case for the USA. The Dominican team was missing TONS of the heaviest Dominican talent this WBC. If USA brings out their top guns, and DR brings out their top guns (Albert Pujols, Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, A-Rod, etc.etc) it will be an interesting matchup. But I wouldn’t guarantee that any one team will win. That would be a hell of a match-up. But the fact is, that both teams had a limited team, and could have made their squad better with better talent from their countries..

Some of you diehard baseball fans aren’t seeing the forest for the trees. The purpose of the WBC is to not only crown a World Champion (congrats DR) but to grow the game around the world. Yet I hear people on this blog who profess to be big baseball fans disparaging the WBC, the very fans who are needed to see this tournament and the game of baseball grow.

I grew up a baseball fan and in time became a huge soccer fan. What got me in to soccer? Watching the World Cup, especially the USA 94 one. It wet my appetite for European club soccer (Go Real Madrid) but I always root for team USA. If the WBC can inspire kids to pick up baseball and not soccer and basketball, why wouldn’t you support it?

And if you are indeed a big baseball fan you should be very worried that kids around the world (not to mention here at home in the USA) might be choosing other sports like soccer over baseball. Venezuela and Japan were once almost exclusively baseball countries, but their soccer teams are now very completive; watch out because Cuba might be next.

So if all you diehard MLB fans were smart, you would encourage, not discourage, interest in the WBC.

I promised a recipe for mofongo the other day. Here, to celebrate Puerto Rico’s defeat by the Dominican, is one such recipe:

Mofongo

3 large green plantains
3 cups salted water
1/2 lb diced bacon
3 garlic cloves, chopped
3 sweet chillis, diced
1/4 cup EVOO
1/4 cup canola oil
salt and pepper to taste

Cut plantains into 1/2″ slices and soak in salted water.
Saute bacon and chop coarsely.
Combine chilli, olive oil and garlic, add salt and pepper.
Fry plantains in canola until brown. Drain. Mash together with bacon and chilli/garlic/oil mixture. Mold into patties. May be served straight or re-fried, or used as a crust in a casserole.

When the game ended, Costas delivered what was perhaps the most limp and whatever “let the celebration begin” kinda thing I’ve ever heard. Not what I expected at all. He’s better than that.

It was great to see Puerto Rico go out and embrace Dominican Republic after the game. Awesome moment for Latin American Baseball.
