Well, MacDonald did put up a .897 OPS against left-handers last year. That and a solid glove makes him useful. Trouble is, compared to the rest of his career the 2012 number vs. LHP looks like a fluke. Three year OPS vs. LHP is a more pedestrian .733, but even that isn’t awful for a shortstop.

I always enjoyed watching Johnny Mac with the Jays. You could count on at least one highlight reel play every night, and when he wasn’t doing that, he was usually with Brian Butterfield or one of the other coaches, chatting and picking his brain and analyzing the game. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a MLB coach or even manager someday.

As for his bat compared to his defense, I would say he is the quintessential anti-Jeter.
