BBWAA President (and Oakland A’s beat writer) Susan Slusser wondered aloud on Twitter yesterday if this meant that the media could also institute a $1 fine for MLB teams that attach a city to their name that they don’t reside in (and looking squarely at the Angels while doing so).

Best (and possibly most underrated) writer in baseball. Hopefully the BBWAA presidency raises her profile a bit.

River Cats do exist…..along the Sacramento River we call them stray cats or feral cats. They eat river rats. River Rats was the name of the Roller Hockey team in the mid 90′s.

I assume it’s a good-natured kangaroo court kind of thing, where they can’t really enforce it, but most people will probably admit it and pay the buck rather than try and save $1 that’s going to charity anyway. But if they did refuse, I assume nothing would come of it, except potentially being mocked over it.

I would strongly suggest that all media just ignore the River Cats, no matter how you spell it. Maybe they can just fold up and go away.

People just don’t get it. This is the minor leagues, and quirky things like this is what the teams thrive on, and it gets them into the press, which brings in the fans. When I was in Cedar Rapids, I caught a foul ball at a Kernels game and was awarded a ‘lifetime contract’ with the team. No, I didn’t show up the next day with my cleats and glove. It’s things like this that make the minor league special, and, in my opinion, much more fun than the majors.

That’s a questionable use of the word “iterations” in the press release. Also, the term “lone exceptions” is not appropriate for a list of three different items. So there.

I think they should just change the name to Sacramento AttentionWhores and save us all a headache. Notice the intentional lack of a space. If they add a space I’m charging them $1.00.

Maybe if such a “river cat” actually existed, people would be more familiar with the spelling.
