Suppose you’re a pimp and you have 10 great girls working for you, earning you money. Every night they go out and they make you more money. Now one of them has to go to another city to, I don’t know, visit he r mom. SHe asks you if she can go and work while she’s there, she knows another pimp there and you know him so you reluctantly agree – what do you have to gain by her working for this other guy? Nothing. Sure, she’ll stay in shape and keep in practice with her prostitue skills but she could be doing that at home with you.

Now she goes to this other city and while she’s there she gets seriously hurt. In fact she’s hurt so bad that when she comes home she won’t be able to work for you for 2 months of your busiest time. THis also puts more pressure on the rest of your girls to make up for the slack of missing this one girl.

You’re out tons of money, you’re busiest time of year is going to suffer and your other girls are gong to suffer until your injured girl gets back.

You had nothing to gain by letting her go and work for someone else. In fact, you spent a lot of money on this girl already, what with the plastic surgery and the STD treatments and now you don’t have anyhting to show for it for the 1st 2 months of your busy season.

It’s hard out here for a pimp.

Injuries like this at the WBC aren’t really the kind of thing that would bother me as a fan…annoying, sure, but this type of thing can happen anytime. I would worry far more about pitchers staying on their throwing program, especially young pitchers, and progressing on schedule through the spring. For the Cardinals, I think not having Yadi in camp for three weeks so that he could work with all of their young pitchers more was a far bigger concern than any injury possibility.

Nah, in Hanley’s case the injury was unavoidable so I just f’d that one up. Freak things like Hanley’s though…nah, that can happen anytime. For some reason, I had it in my head that he had hurt his wrist not his thumb, and that it was sore for a while but he played on it in the WBC. I don’t know WHERE the hell I got that from at all.

However, I stand by the rest of my comment that in the case of Wright, he hurt his back further by playing injured because it was the WBC and if it was meaningless spring training games he would have sat out until he felt 100%.

It’s why teams don’t allow players to participate in dangerous activities in the offseason, etc. the WBC infringes on a players expected “UNDIVIDED LOYALTY” to their team, as long as their contract is in effect. Since the teams, not MLB, don’t benefit from the WBC, they should include clauses in their contracts from player participation. Just because bud’s spell over the owners, about how this raises baseballs profile worldwide, doesn’t mean this spell can’t be broken.

If Dee Gordon gets healthy that will certainly help. He won’t be able to replace Rameirez’s power but at least he’s better in the field and will provide some speed.

The only thing I question about the WBC is whether players try to play through injuries while they are at the WBC. if this was something that Ramirez felt a slight twinge in his wrist, but tried to play through it because he was in the WBC as opposed to meaningless spring training games, then I think it would be a legitimate gripe.

It isn’t like every single injury just “happens”. A lot of times, an injury in one body part occurs because of an injury to a different body part…i.e a pitcher twists his ankle, tries to pitch through it, and hurts his shoulder. Also, these guys are away from the trainers that they are most comfortable with so they may not be as quick to tell them they feel some pain. I fully believe that Wright’s injury would not have gotten so severe if this were a typical spring training because he would not have tried to play through it. As for Ramirez, with what I can remember about his history, I doubt he would have played through the pain, but you never know.

Now this is where someone will complain that the WBC is to blame and it shouldn’t exist because these injuries could be avoided. Had this injury occurred during a Spring Training game or practice it would be written off as “part of the game”.
