The Mets name Jon Niese the Opening Day starter

Mar 21, 2013, 5:40 PM EDT

Not bad for a guy who was supposed to need heart surgery this offseason:

Niese is coming off a year in which he went 13-9 with a 3.40 ERA in 190 innings.

That reference to Santana, of course, is Johan, who still has no timetable for throwing off a mound and is still building up arm strength.

Did he win it by a nose?

Is HardballTalk going to mention that Wright was named team captain? Sort of a foregone conclusion but I’d say it’s bigger news than Niese getting the Opening Day nod.

That news was released on here about week ago.

Yeah, I guess making it official doesn’t mean much when it was already announced thy would do it before Opening Day

I didn’t realize the news about Wright being captain was official at the time I read it. Also didn’t realize how rare naming an outright captain for a baseball team was. My bad.
