Yuniesky Betancourt could soon be yours, 29 other baseball teams

Mar 22, 2013, 1:01 PM EDT

Yuniesky Betancourt

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Yuniesky Betancourt will ask for his release this weekend if he’s not added to the Phillies’ 25-man roster.  Which he may very well not be given that Kevin Frandsen and Freddy Galvis are already around.

Thing is, Betancourt has had a heck of a spring. He’s hitting .439 with a .957 OPS. No, that doesn’t make up for the fact that his entire career demonstrates that he’s an offensive liability — and that he’s really no great shakes with the glove either — but someone will look at those numbers and say “maybe … just maybe …”

The Phils should use their options on Galvis and/or Frandsen and send one of them down and hold on to Betancourt solely for the purposes of getting something, anything, in a trade.

Cardinals, Dodgers, A’s and others are extremely thin at infield depth.

No one in MLB has infield depth so thin that Betancourt would represent an upgrade. The Cardinals (just as nearly every team does) has 2 guys in AAA that are each far superior to Betancourt on defense and couldn’t possibly hit poorly enough to not represent an upgrade over Betancourt.

Even the thought of a Betancourt signing by the Cards, gives me the creeps.

      • evanwins - Mar 22, 2013 at 3:04 PM

We’ll see. I’ve looked through your comments and you are often wrong so you’re probably wrong about this as well.

But let me guess – you are better than 90% of the GMs out there right? You know more, have a whole set of things you would do differently, could easily build a WS chamion ML roster if only you weren’t so busy selling insurance and someone gave you a chance.

You say Betancourt won’t end up on a MLB team, right? Remember that.

      • paperlions - Mar 22, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Oh, he’ll probably end up on a team….none of which changes the fact that he is not good at baseball.

Let me guess, Phillies fan? Constantly over-valuing players on the team because that’s just a habit.

Feel free to list all the things I’m wrong about….I sure don’t suggest dumb things like “they should hold on to Betancourt to get something in trade”, no one would give up anything of value for that guy.

      • evanwins - Mar 22, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Not good at baseball? Compared to who, Ian Kinsler? OR Pete Kozma, who in 6 years in the minors has amassed a whopping .236 avg and a .945 fielding percentage? Or Ryan Jackson who hit .136 this spring and has a minor league fielding % of .965?

You don’t know half as much as you think you do, literally.

And hell yeah I;m a Phillies fan, a fan of the team that’s won more games in baseball over the past 6 years than EVERY OTHER TEAM except the Yankees. We got that way by accurately valuing players not by taking what we think we know or taking what we WANT to believe and making it true.

You’re a joke and too easy pick on. I’m gonna laugh a long time about how you think 2 guys in AAA with no MLB experience and mediocre stats are better options than Betancourt.

      • evanwins - Mar 22, 2013 at 5:05 PM

OMG. I just read a comment of yours where you said teams were picking up players to replace their WBC players!!!

How dumb are you exactly? You think teams sign people to fill in for 2 weeks? LOL! What do you think this is, a bar league?

I tell ya, that matched with your Cardinals AAA infield depth comment should make you consider relaxing a bit on your commenting, maybe start over with a new user name on some other board somewhere.

And above it all you actually act cocky, like you know what you’re talking about. Look at your 2:09 comment above, like your some kind of authority. What a joke.

      • paperlions - Mar 23, 2013 at 8:26 AM

I’ll make this easy for you.

I am far smarter than you are.

I understand far more about baseball than you do.

I base my opinions on far more information than you do.

There, now you know…so, go be horribly wrong arguing with someone else….that all of those dumb ass comments you were making in the Boras thread.

Hey! I don’t want this douchebag.

      • paperlions - Mar 23, 2013 at 1:47 PM

C’mon, step up to the challenge, take one for the team, be gritty and scrappy and all that….you can do it!

      • Kevin S. - Mar 23, 2013 at 2:34 PM

I’d rather beat him with power and patience when I have to take him on.

Wasn’t there some team on the sunset side whose ass slammed shut on his thumb recently?

    • Old Gator - Mar 22, 2013 at 1:13 PM

This isn’t “Mystery Team” embarassing – but I swear certain HBT fans said Betancourt would be a footnote at best, despitee predcitions to the contrary

“So pray for Jimmy Rollins‘ health, Phillies fans. Pray hard.”
