The rib cage injury that caused Brett Lawrie to drop out of the World Baseball Classic will also cause him to begin the season on the disabled list, the Blue Jays announced.

Lawrie suffered a strained rib cage in one of Team Canada’s exhibition games before the WBC tournament and initially hoped to miss just two weeks, saying the injury wasn’t as bad as a similar injury last season.

Instead he’s been out for three weeks and Maicer Izturis will fill in at third base for Toronto.

“@Wilnerness590: With Lawrie starting on DL, #Bluejays will go with either DeRosa or Izturis/Boni at third, “depending on what bat we want” – Gibby. #Jays”

So why is the WBC only paying salaries for Hanley Ramirez and Mark Teixeira? Why not Lowrie too? I mean, I know he’s cheap compared to the other guys, but it doesn’t seem right.

Do we know that they aren’t picking up his tab?

They are picking up the tab for everyone, those guys were just used as examples of guys we already know for a fact will be missing time due to injuries incurred while with their WBC clubs.

I wouldn’t want to be the WBC’s disability insurance carrier.

Lawrie is not seriously injured. The problem for the Jays is that he has not had many at bats this spring. They want him to get several at bats before he is activated. In the meanwhile, the Jays will go with 8 relief pitchers while Lawrie is on the DL. The plan is to drop 1 relief pitcher once he is activated.

Not a real surprise…still, my reaction is “crap”. Aren’t rib injuries kinda nagging? With someone who plays as hard (bordering on reckless at times) as Lawrie, I worry that this will be an issue throughout the season.

Lawrie is hurt? Really? Sincerely, Brewer fans still pissed about getting Shaun Marcum for Lawrie.

This is clearly the fault of the Red Sox training staff.
