Meanwhile, at the Marlins’ box office …

Mar 25, 2013, 2:34 PM EDT

Not saying things are slow as far as ticket sales go, but …

Buy one/get one free for Opening Day?

Man, it’s gonna be ugly this year.

  1. Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Not really. Rows of empty seats, like in the photo above, have a certain pristine elegance about them.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:42 PM

By the way, that bunting might be a target for predator drone practice. Why would it surprise anyone that Scrooge McLoria leases the stadium out for other purposes when the team is on the road?

      • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:44 PM

incidentally, the evidence is that this sales gambit is working. After those four guys on line bought their tickets at Winter Fest (or whatever they called it), two more guys came by and bought these twofers.

      • heyblueyoustink - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:03 PM

“By the way, that bunting might be a target for predator drone practice”

On a personal note, and totally unrelated, if I catch one of those things near my house, and it’s been a long time since I could have been accused of destruction of government property, i’m telling you now, that sucker is going down like the hindenburg.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Oh, and another thing – check the back of those opening day special tickets! The Feesh front orifice has been hard at work pencilling in an immunity from persecution clause, so if you decide you don’t like the bonus seats they give you, the team promises that you won’t be sued.

      Value added!

      • elpendejo59 - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Bought mine already! I am one of the 12 people in South Florida that is attending Opening Night. Then again, I am a Braves fan. And I get them at a pretty deep discount because my employer sponsors a certain stupid race between innings. So I guess I am getting discounted buy one get one free tickets, which is still more money than I should be giving Loria. I guess this means my love of my Braves is stronger than my hate for Loria, which I didn’t think was possible.

      • alang3131982 - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Are you suggesting Loria is a regular Milo Miderbinder. Everyone has a share!

      • professormaddog31 - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:50 PM

elpendejo59 – I was going to say something about how they chose their opening opponent wisely. If I were anywhere around that area, I’d strongly consider shelling out the $10 or whatever it would be to see the Braves play, even if it is at Mardi Gras Float Garage Park or Banana Massacre Stadium or whatever derogatory moniker we wanna put on that sucker. The crowd’s going to be full of Atlanta fans, it’s going to be great. :)

      • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 5:17 PM

        “Help the general manager!”

        “I am the general manager. I’m OK/”

        “Then help him. Help him!”

  2. number42is1 - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Craig – one week to go and still no official HBT predictions.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Untrue. Each of the individual team evaluations that have been running here for the past two weeks ended with a ranking call.

Bet you can’t guess the prediction for the Feesh.

      • number42is1 - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:50 PM

does not count.. i need the breakdown from each guy… yes.. NEED!

Feesh finish 1st place with 138 wins. swept in first round being shutout in all 3 games.

      • heyblueyoustink - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:00 PM

There isn’t enough puff puff give in the world to make that happen.

      • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:02 PM

I don’t even think there’s an alternate universe where that could happen.

      • Francisco (FC) - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Sure there is, it’s the one where all the Marlin’s players wear goatees.

  3. jaysjunkie - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:44 PM

    Wow, that is bleak.

  4. Chris Fiorentino - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Worst fans in baseball. Two titles in 17 years and they can’t even fill the new ballpark for opening day a year later? What a disgrace. They should have moved this team somewhere with some real fans.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Worst ownership in baseball. They can’t sustain a competitive payroll for four months and then expect the fans to pour in and pay to see crap? What other industry places an intentionally inferior product before its potential customers and then complains when they won’t pay for it?

Even Ford doesn’t do that anymore.

      • stex52 - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Part of my somewhat hostile discussions with other Astro’s fans. To what extent am I expected to exhibit total fanboydom for a team that fields a AA lineup, raises prices, and shows contempt for winning on any kind of definite timetable?

If that’s not marketing an inferior product, I’m hard pressed for another definition.

But there is one bright spot. They can’t close the deal on the Comcast broadcast package with the other cable providers, so 60% of Houston will be unable to see them. Having seen them last year, I feel somewhat blessed.

      • chadjones27 - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:30 PM

        The Apple iPhone

      • bleedgreen - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Tell me, good sir, what does the iPhone not do that other (Android?) phones do. Think carefully. Something relevant and actually used now, too.

        Disclaimer: I own a Nexus 4, a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 7.

      • weaselpuppy - Mar 25, 2013 at 6:30 PM

ummm…well…have you seen the Detroit Lions since, oh 1957?

        William Clay Ford….suuuuuper geeeeeeniusss…..

      • manchestermiracle - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:28 AM

OG: Georgia Frontiere did it in L.A. so she’d have a plausible (in her mind anyway) excuse to move the Rams to St. Louis.

      • FrustratedDolFan - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Not to mention that Loria is such a likable guy. The thought of lining his pockets with my hard earned money makes me vomit. I will continue to support Red and the boys from a far. Go Marlins!!

    • bizzmoneyb - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:59 PM

it’s empty for a reason, asswhipe. it’s the owner, not the fans. they didn’t need to do something like this last year. the fans are done with this crap. 3+ fire sales in 15 years, the most recent of which was last year, after they got their stadium and promised to start spending. they didn’t win, now this is the reason they go back to a $30 mill payroll. fans have had enough, and are now showing it. I hope the stadium is empty every game and that con artist Loria somehow still loses mobey.

The stadium may be empty, but the owner will still make money-a sad fact of life with revenue sharing. I would support a rule change whereby if an owners team finished below .500 in any given 5 years out of 10, then the owner would lose ownership/claim of the team. Would never happen, but would force owners to actually want a good product on the field every year instead of trying to pass off rancid horse meat as filet mignon.

    • asimonetti88 - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:03 PM

You’re right. They have all the makings of a successful team. Which makes Loria’s ability to alienate fans that much more impressive.

    • flcounselor - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:45 PM

You really haven’t been following baseball much over the past 17 years, have you Chris?

    • Chris Fiorentino - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:21 PM

Craig, I have to admit that I now know exactly how you feel when you troll phillies fans. It’s almost too easy. I can envision the first five or six responses I am going to get every time I write a comment in a Marlins post. It begins with OG, whose opinion I respect and who always exhibits class even if he thinks I am a knuckle dragger lol. Them comes the fish who take the bait hook, line, and sinker.

I believe I may be close to earning the master baiter belt from you.

      • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:57 PM

I would only offer the caveat that you haven’t baited Feesh fans, just the many soulful folk who feel sorry for us and defend us they way they would rescue a stray puppy and see that it got all its shots.

    • moogro - Mar 25, 2013 at 11:19 PM

      Chris, that’s silly

  5. dowhatifeellike - Mar 25, 2013 at 2:54 PM

I know there’s a company in Baltimore that puts together a similar package every year – opening day ticket, a ticket to a game later in the season, and all you can drink piss beer at a nearby bar for $50 on opening day… but that’s done independently and that package sells out in a few hours.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team have to do such a thing directly.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Yeah, without the beer and at a fraction of the price – and they still can’t give them away.

      • dowhatifeellike - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:55 PM

And it’s a night game too! As much as people deride Baltimore’s attendance, they could play at 9am and still fill the place on opening day.

      • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Yeah, well, you’ve got all those nifty light rail and bus lines converging on the Yards, dontcha? Scrooge McLoria found a way to build Macondo Banana Massacre Field just west of downtown and still leave it feeling like it’s in the middle of nowhere.

  6. rollteal - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:22 PM

It’s time to remodel the stadium for the Hurricane’s to play there & let the Marlins move and get some new ownership.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:28 PM

If the Feesh got some new ownership, they wouldn’t have to move – assuming that, for the first time in the history of the franchise, they got an owner who understood the dynamics of his fan base and was willing to be patient and committed to putting a quality team on the field for more than two years at a time before giving up and decimating his payroll.

  7. bizzmoneyb - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:30 PM

all Loria’s doing. you can’t get a brand new stadium then hold a firesale in its first season. this is the 3rd firesale us fans have been through. and after you get a brand new stadium that was supposed to prevent this from happening again? sorry, game over. all so he can line his pockets. they are proven liars and con men. I had season tickets now I will not go to a single game. until someone else owns the team they will not get another dime from me. no other team treats its fans this way. enough is enough. and from this deal it looks like a lot feel the same way. dont go to games, dont watch on TV and give them ratings. until we force this owner out BAN THE MARLINS!!!!

  8. myopinionisrighterthanyours - Mar 25, 2013 at 3:38 PM

They are also selling tickets on Groupon.

    • Old Gator - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Despair is the mother of haplessness.

  9. echech88 - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:06 PM

Good for their fans. I wouldn’t go to a single game this year if this was “my team”.

  10. jaybird22seven - Mar 25, 2013 at 4:58 PM

And in the second week of baseball the Marlins will be offering buy one get two free tickets

  11. jimmymarlinsfan - Mar 25, 2013 at 9:06 PM

I can’t wait to see all the empty seats the Braves have during their next playoffs game, whenever that may be. But I know one thing, if there is one city in the USA that out fair weather’s Miami fans. It’s Atlanta fans. Congrats. It’s really something to look up to other the the braves stellar record of World Series titles during the Bobby Cox era. What’s that? They only won one? No wonder their fans don’t care

  12. schuckme - Mar 26, 2013 at 3:39 AM

only the Marlins would do this kind of thing wit a picture of empty seats.. oh the sweet irony.. I smell desperation

  13. marc127 - Mar 26, 2013 at 5:20 AM

Ha ha it says “subject to availability”…..silly Marlins!
