Derek Lowe makes the Rangers as a middle reliever

Derek Lowe, who signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers three weeks ago, has made the Opening Day roster as a middle reliever, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.

He’ll presumably work low-leverage innings while also being around for any potential spot starts.

At age 40 and coming off back-to-back seasons with an ERA over 5.00 he’s not a great bet to have much success in Texas, but Lowe is a durable enough arm to provide some value in the bullpen.

    He’s awful.

      Yep.

Terrible starter but I think he still has value as a reliever. he can eat innings and induce ground balls. He doesn’t need to face a lineup more than once to be effective.

He can fill that Scott Feldman role.. Hopefully he doesn’t have to start.

Guy like him can have some real value in that limited role. And they have the advantage that they can still put up the runs big time. Might be a decent deal for a year.
