After leading the Giants to World Series titles in two out of the past three seasons, general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy have quite a bit of job security.

The Giants announced this evening that they have extended the contracts of Sabean and Bochy through 2016. They already had their 2014 options picked up back in December, but extension discussions were expected to take place this spring.

Sabean has been the Giants’ general manager since the end of 1996 and will have 20 seasons on the job by the end of this new deal. He’s already the longest-tenured general manager in MLB. Bochy owns a 503-469 (.517) record since taking over as Giants’ skipper prior to the 2007 season.

You can watch a live stream of a press conference with Sabean and Bochy on CSNBayArea.com.

I remembered a time, around Zito’s 3rd season, where it was common to mock Sabean as a GM.

    Well. Ellipsis.

Eh, he’s still regularly mocked. Bad process can result in good results from time to time. Not exactly a team set up for long-term success.

The Giants greatest strength is continuity. Not only Sabean and Bochy, but also Tidrow, Righetti and other coaches, minor league and front office personnel.

Sabean and Bochy make a great team and really seem to know each other’s style and preferences. Good move by the Giants even if it was the obvious one.

I remember some debates Craig, the other commenters, and I had on Shysterball about Brian Sabean’s qualities. Craig and the rest of the free world felt strongly that Sabean was a clown, that his signing of one geezer after another to team with Bonds was proof of full-on clown mode. I thought he was doing what he did mainly because of team orders from the then managing partner. Bonds retires, that managing partner leaves, and behold, 2 series wins in 3 years. Was I right? We don’t know, can’t know for sure. But clearly the current senior management of the Giants believes in Sabean. I’ll settle for that.
