Buster Posey, Giants in “serious” extension talks

Mar 29, 2013, 1:30 PM EDT

Justin Verlander and Paul Goldschmidt got extensions on the even of the 2013 season. Any room for Buster Posey?

The big question here is whether it would be a “lifetime” deal like the kind Joey Votto and Troy Tulowitzki got or, rather, whether this is a buyout of the arb years and a bit of his free agency.  Posey being a catcher, this matters quite a bit.

And this is why guys like Fielder and Pujols get infinite years when they hit free-agency. It’s rare for a middle of the order bat to be available.

I doubt he’ll get a huge extension without agreeing to switch to 1st base at some point soon. My understanding is that they asked him to do that awhile ago but he said he wanted a few more years of catching. A great hitting catcher is a wonderful thing to have, but if it shortens his career by giving knee and back problems I think they’ll feel better moving him to 1st at some point.

From a value standpoint, that is like suggesting that ARod should have been moved to DH to prolong his career.

First base or no, if I was in line for that kind of dough, I’d have a huge extension!

8 more years, $159 million, which brings him to 9 years total for $167 million
