Giants trade Scott Proctor to the Orioles

The Giants have traded pitcher Scott Proctor to the Orioles for cash, reports Hank Schulman on Twitter. Proctor will report to Triple-A Norfolk.

Proctor posted a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings with the Giants this spring. He last pitched in the Majors in 2011, spending last season with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization. The right-hander had previously spent time with the Yankees, Dodgers, and Braves. Once thought to be a lights-out reliever in waiting, Proctor dealt with control issues that hampered his ability to find work in the Majors.

The Orioles just added Freddy Garcia and are now hoping they can strike lightning in a bottle with the 36-year-old Proctor.

Proctor had a good career ahead of him until Torre used him 5 days a week

Proctor blamed it on his alcoholism.

His drinking surely didn’t help but Torre burned him to the ground. Just like he did with Ramiro Mendoza and Tayon Sturtz. Three very good relievers that Torre overcooked.

My thinking is Proctor has two reasons for saying it was the drinking. One, to an extent it was and he wants to take responsibility it, which is admirable. The other is he wants to stay in baseball after his playing days are over. And, bad mouthing Torre wouldn’t be smart. One, Torre has a lot of connections. Two, if he bad mouthed Torre it’d look like he was some whiny Prima Donna not taking responsibility for his short comings.

Torre had his good attributes as a manager but he was not a great tactician and he stunk at handling pitchers. Mendoza, Sturtz and Proctor are exhibits 1,2 and 3.

I wish Proctor luck this year, .. except when he faces the Yankees.

drinking will toughen a man up, booze didnt send him to the mound everynite, Torre did. I wouldnt be where i am today if it were not for booze

Or it could just be that alcohol is damaging to muscle tissue and weakened muscle tissue places the tendons and ligaments at an increased risk of injury. Thus alcoholism put Scott Proctor at a greater risk of injury than a non-alcoholic reliever, all other things being equal. Being used so much didn’t help, but let’s not act like being under the eye of Joe Torre is a death sentence. If it was, then Mariano Rivera would have burned out a decade ago.

Also, Tanyon Sturtze was not only a shitty reliever, but had been pitching in the majors since 1995 and was in his mid-30s by the time he joined the Yankees bullpen in the mid-aughts. Seems like you guys are really reaching for the “Torre burns out bullpen arms” explanation.
