Johan Santana undergoes shoulder surgery

Apr 2, 2013, 12:31 PM EDT

Second time around for major shoulder surgery for one of the best pitchers I’ve ever seen:

“Successful” is good, of course. But I sort of feel like we’ve seen him pitch his last. I hope not, but given how long and hard his recovery was the last time he had this surgery, I have a bad feeling about it.

    Best Rule 5 pickup ever.

Santana was a joy to watch. When he played for the Twins, seem like he was always having fun and a good guy to have on the team — I recall watching him shag flies in the outfield on his off days and just goofing around more than once.

The trade turned out bad for the Twins and bad for the Mets. The Twins didn’t really get anything for him, and could maybe made a better playoff run if they would have just held on to him that year. When it’s all over, the Mets will have paid more than $2M per win.

He had some great performances as a Met. The no-hitter, the last game of 2008 just to name two. Yeah, he was injured way too much, but therein lies the risk of longterm contracts to pitchers. But it did not turn out bad for the Mets. That’s an overstatement.

Thanks for the memories Johan, you were the greatest twins pitch of my generation. I wish you luck in your next stage of life. And as far as the trade it’s safe to say it was a lose, lose, lose. Neither franchise got what they were hoping to get and Johan I’m sure wishes he could have done more for NYM’s teammates and fans. Just a sad turn of events.
