Hiroki Kuroda leaves 2013 debut after getting hit with liner

Hiroki Kuroda had a less-than-ideal 2013 debut.

The right-hander surrendered a Red Sox run in the top of the first inning then took a Shane Victorino line drive off his right fingertips to lead off the second. Kuroda hit the next batter, Jackie Bradley Jr. and walked Jacoby Ellsbury on four pitches. He then plunked Daniel Nava with the bases loaded.

Kuroda was pulled after facing 11 Boston hitters and allowing two runs on a walk and four hits. It was by far the shortest start of his major league career.

The Victorino line drive probably caused some numbness in his right fingers, but Kuroda’s struggles began in the first. The Yankees desperately need the 38-year-old from Osaka, Japan to eat innings this season and he was unable to do that on Wednesday night against the rival Red Sox. Boston won the game 7-4.

UPDATE, 8:47 PM ET:’s Bryan Hoch reports that Kuroda has been diagnosed with a bruised right middle finger. He will undergo precautionary X-rays at Yankee Stadium.

UPDATE, 10:51 PM ET: The X-rays were negative, according to Hoch. Kuroda is day-to-day.

This yankees team right now is borderline atrocious. The offense is awful and if Kuroda and/or CC end up missing any time at all the Bronx will be burning by May. I mean I think my Red Sox are gonna be alright this season… but this isn’t even really fun right now, I just kinda feel bad for the yankees.

You really shouldn’t. Us Yankee fans had absolutely no sympathy for the Red Sox plight last season, now it’s your turn for schadenfraude.

I just never really took pleasure in beating the crap out of a team that’s suffering injuries. I’d prefer to see a ball squeaking by Jeter, Arod flailing at the plate and Granderson looking lost in CF. I literally looked at some dude in pinstripes and I yelled at my TV “Who the hell are you?!”

With that said it’s nice to pretend that the Sox are going to be putting up 8 runs a game and that Jarrod Saltalamachiahaayayhaya is going to actually make contact more than 1/5 of the time this year.

Now I can wear my yankees suck shirt with pride.

Don’t waste a moment feeling bad for the evil empire. They’ll just buy up some all stars and reload if they spiral down too far. Too many front running, bandwagon fans will desert them if they have a season like Boston did last year.

Man up you sissy…that cat on the Tigers took a drive off his melon and stayed in the game!

Ah it doesn’t matter…Giradi just didn’t want his #2 starter to get rocked in his first start.

Settle in arrogant Yankee fans…its gonna be a long season in da Bronx.

That cat = Doug Foster in the 2012 World Series.

Distant cousin of Doug Fister perhaps?

Damn Red Sox! Stop getting my hopes up for this season you buncha buttholes!

Could be worse. Could have been an ocean liner.

If the Yanks were a cruise ship they’d be a Carnival cruise chip…grab the life jackets boys, she’s going down!

Relax! It is early and May should be different. In addition, Hughes will soon be ready make his debut.

DOOOOOOOOM..or we might want to wait till mid may or June. Since you know baseball is 162 games and all.

    • bigharold - Apr 4, 2013 at 12:01 AM

No, let’em run with it. It’s not like anybody that really understands baseball thinks the first two games of the season are the way it’s going to stay until September.

2 games in and it’s over. I could care less about the Yankees but you people are ridiculous.
