Brian Roberts suffers hamstring injury, gets helped off field

Apr 4, 2013, 6:04 PM EDT

Brian Roberts, Jose Lobaton AP

In what one can only hope is a temporary setback for Brian Roberts‘ comeback bid, the Orioles second baseman left Thursday’s game in the ninth inning with a right hamstring injury.

Roberts said he felt a pop in his hamstring before diving headfirst into second base in the game against the Rays. He didn’t put any weight on the leg as he was aided off the field.

Roberts was 1-for-4 today and 5-for-12 on the young season. He was hurt on his first steal attempt of the year.

Assuming that Roberts lands on the disabled list, the Orioles will probably go to Ryan Flaherty and Alexi Casilla at second base. They do have top prospect Jonathan Schoop available, but it’s doubtful they’d turn to him so soon. They actually have him slated to play shortstop this year after he spent most of last season at second base.

    He’s a vagina

Wait, that’s a bad thing now?

      I like vagina…

    • cur68 - Apr 4, 2013 at 6:18 PM

Fuck off. He’s been excellent his whole career till concussions and injuries relatively recently. Also, you are not only ignorant of Brian Roberts, you are also ignorant of vaginas. Vaginas are DAMN tough. They can take a pounding and still get the job the done (I quote Betty White, there. She legitimately points out that testicles, by comparison, are delicate and easily injured. May she live to be a thousand).

Speaking of vaginas, did I ever tell you all about how my mother felt while watching Mickey Mantle play?

Why out Schoop at SS? Hardy is there, Machado is there eventually. Why not keep working on Schoop at 2B?

    • fukpittsburgh - Apr 4, 2013 at 6:25 PM

I like him at second as well. However, Hardy only has one year left on his deal after this year and I think they are starting to like Machado at third so….My guess is somebody here is going to be used as trade bait at some point (excluding Machado of course).

Ditch the head first slide, your not Billy Ripken

  4. ncm42 - Apr 4, 2013 at 6:36 PM

You think they’re really going to make Manny a permanent 3rd baseman?

  5. rockthered1286 - Apr 4, 2013 at 6:50 PM

I had a quasi-identity theft issue followed by baby vomit in a brand new car in the same day, and still feel luckier than B-Rob.

Hamstring pop? Hmm. One of those killed my softball career…

    He’ll be fine. In a month. :(

Wait.. Brian Roberts got injured?!?! That makes this season just like every other season since the Mitchell Report came out. I guess he is trying to keep his own Iron Man streak alive.

  8. jwayne03 - Apr 4, 2013 at 7:18 PM

@cur68 I dont know about what kind of vaginas you see but most vaginas i see get hurt when slid into…

    • mclovinib - Apr 4, 2013 at 8:10 PM

      what a douchebag

    • cur68 - Apr 5, 2013 at 1:45 AM

Now that both Marcum and Roberts are on the DL, we can say the 2013 MLB season has officially started. What’s the over/under for Hafner going down?

  11. lazlosother - Apr 4, 2013 at 10:05 PM

Roberts is snake-bit. I was hoping to see a healthy season for him. The game is better when players like Roberts are good to go.

  12. rockthered1286 - Apr 4, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Started 5 for 12 so it’s not like he’s been sucking it up at the plate or in the field. Just another freak injury by b-rob. The bigger concern? Casilla and Flaherty combine are still worse than a healthy b-rob. And we won’t see Schoop anytime soon. So there’s that.

    Up by 4…. No outs… In the 9th inning…

Seems like a really stupid time for one of the most oft-injured players in the league to be stealing a base.

Sure, he’d have to steal a base eventually… But I don’t think this was it.
