Watch Manny Ramirez’s first home run in Taiwan

Apr 4, 2013, 12:48 PM EST

Manny Ramirez hit his first home run for the EDA Rhinos in Taiwan today–a bomb to straightaway center field–and the television announcer got very, very excited about it:

(Complicated handshake to Ben Badler of Baseball America for the clip.)

Imagine if a major league team reacted like that to an early season homer that brought them to 2 runs back? The whole squad would get beaned.

That’s part of the problem with MLB, players and fans take it way to serious… I would love if teams got excited about those types of things. Watching the DR in the WBC was refreshing

Seems like the older you get (Little League to Pros) the less fun baseball becomes because of the “unwritten rules”. I say F that, high step after a hit, do flips after a HR and dog pile after every win…Lets bring the fun back into baseball because its close to dreadful to watch

The unwritten book of rules hasn’t yet been translated to Chinese.

What does that say on the front of his uniform? I can’t read Yiddish.

Unwritten book of rules will be collected in a bag of fortune cookies.

Waiter! Where is my cat foo young?

Manny looked pretty good. And props to the Taiwanese announcer for rolling his Rs.

…coming 929 days since Manny’s last home run in professional baseball (9/17/2010)

Manny would be the best hitter in the Astros lineup.

    • notsofast10 - Apr 4, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Except wouldn’t he have to sit out 100 games because a 2nd PED offense?

      • dswan3199 - Apr 5, 2013 at 6:11 PM

He Already served his second offense. It was reduced to 50 when he signed with the A’s.

Swing at a pitch a foot off the ground and hit it 430 feet? Yeah, that’s just Manny being Manny no matter what country he is in.

The announcing was interesting. Excuse my use of “bla” for the Taiwanese used here, but I definately heard the following:

“bla, bla, bla…Manny Ramirez! bla.. 2 run homer!”

    and on the replay:

    “bla bla bla…see you later!”

strange mix of Taiwanese and English. There’s nothing in the language for home run?

    • butchhuskey - Apr 4, 2013 at 5:39 PM

It’s no different than an English language announcer saying “Sayonara, baseball!” or Jon Miller saying “Adios, pelota!”

  7. jm91rs - Apr 4, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Did you guys listen to the whole clip? I’m pretty sure at the 2:40 mark, the announcer says an English phrase, “see you later” as the ball clears the wall.

He dug that thing out of the dirt. Nice hit, he smacked the crap out of it.

  9. sometogethernow - Apr 4, 2013 at 3:17 PM

How big are the rosters in the Taiwanese league? I swear I saw Manny high-five at least 30 dudes after the homer.

  10. ramrene - Apr 4, 2013 at 5:59 PM

Manny’s ‘roiding up again. And since they don’t have steroid testing over there he’ll hit 30 by their All-Star break and finish the season with 62!
