Yankees targeting May 1 for Derek Jeter’s return

Apr 4, 2013, 4:31 PM EDT

Derel Jeter

Derek Jeter told everyone he was on his usual schedule for spring training and that ended up not being the case. Then some folks have said that he may be back by mid-April, but that seems not to be the case now either. Jon Heyman reports that the new target is May 1.

Jeter was able to begin playing catch earlier this week but still hasn’t done any sort of infield work or running.  At this point the goal should be to make sure he’s available continuously for the bulk of the season rather than to get him back as soon as possible for its own sake.

With all the other injuries, it is not as if he would have an impact if he rejoined the team before May Day.

I don’t agree. His bat would certainly help as would his leadership. Also, it isn’t likely that he’ll show up and start ripping the cover off the ball. He’s going to essentially be in ST when he gets back.

The sooner he’s back the better and it will certainly have an impact.

Is Texeira going to be back before Jeter? Never would’ve guessed that a few weeks ago…

I hope this does not put them in too big of a hole, but the Yankees have a history of starting a bit slow and turning it up as the season moves on. If they can keep it somewhat close they should be on but only time will tell.

May 1 seems to be the ETA for Jeter, Teixeira and Granderson. Until then, the Yankee slogan should be MAY DAY, MAY DAY!

      “MAY DAY MAY DAY”
Why that’s the Russian new year. You know we’ll have a big parade and serve hot hors d’ouevres

Good idea. For the Yankees, the real season begins in May. It is a good reason for a celebration.

What’s this? They’ve been telling me for years that for the Yankees the real season begins in October. Are you telling me that’s not true?

And everytime Mark Buehrle pitching this season jays slogan should be “BOMBS AWAY!!! BOMBS AWAY!!!!” Id get used to it cause that is exactly what you will be seeing from mark this year

If the Jays keep hitting 5 home runs each time Buehrle pitches, it will a lot of fun. Bautista, Encarnacion, Rasmus and Arencibia with 2 all went deep.

good luck with that 5 HR’s everytime Buehrle pitches cause you’re gonna need it, and i would expect to see quite a few 5 inning specials like he put in tonight

How’s he going to be back in like 3 weeks if he hasn’t run or taken a ground all still?

May 1: Gift baskets all around.
