Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew was hoping to be available for the club’s home opener on Monday afternoon against the Orioles. That’s not going to happen, but he shouldn’t be all that far behind.

According to beat writer Sean McAdam of CSN New England, Drew was unable to play in a scheduled rehab game Saturday at Double-A Portland because of freezing temperatures. The plan calls four Drew to play four total rehab games, so he will remain at the Double-A level for an extra day and then join up with the Red Sox on Wednesday for the second game of their three-game set against the visiting Orioles.

Drew was signed this winter to a one-year, $9.5 million free agent contract. He suffered a concussion in early March when he was struck in the batting helmet with a pitch during a Grapefruit League game.

Jose Iglesias has been filling in at shortstop and is currently 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate.

    I’d rather watch jose I.
I don’t care if he has to bunt every at bat, his glove ROCKS!!!

McCartney is an old Paddy who still rocks. That glove you mentioned is an inanimate object.

It’s the right move giving Drew his job back. But it’s nice to know Iglesias can handle it up here now should he be needed. And he will be needed at some point. Although the first error he makes Fenway will be all over him. Fair or not.

The starting job is not Drew’s. It belongs to the best player on that given day. Drew has a one-year deal and team controls Inglesias for a lot longer than that. If Drew sucks or can’t stay healthy like his older sibling, then he’s just an overpaid one year rental.

Not sure if this was an intentional jab or not, but the following line was a little misleading:

“According to beat writer Sean McAdam of CSN New England, Drew was unable to play in a scheduled rehab game Saturday at Double-A Portland because of freezing temperatures”.

He was unable to play because the game was cancelled because of freezing temperatures.

    Just saying!
