The Orioles trade Luis Ayala to the Braves

Apr 10, 2013, 2:32 PM EDT

Wait … he’s not an Upton. I don’t understand:

Apparently the impetus for this is that the Orioles need to free up roster space for Chris Dickerson or some such. Good for them. The Braves, though, are getting a more-than-servicable bullpen arm in Ayala. He posted a 2.64 ERA and 51/15 K/BB ratio over 75 innings last season and will help with depth due to the Braves losing Jonny Venters for seemingly ever.

Chris Jones has had some good years in the lower levels, but usually after repeating them. He’s in his second year in Double-A, but he’s organizational depth at best at the moment.

Oh well. Viva roster space.

Ayala let something int he realm of 100 percent of inherited runners score last year. PECOTA projects him for a 4.81 ERA, and ZIPS thinks he’ll be replacement level. Superficially solid ERAs notwithstanding, Ayala is probably something less than serviceable going forward.

odd pitcher. WHen he was on the MEts I always thought he should do better than he did. FOoled by velocity, I guess.

Ayala needs clean innings, the O’s don’t give them to him.

If you can’t come in and get 1 or 2 outs, why should you get to try for 3? He’s had his chances and he can’t produce clean innings himself.

I agree with this completely. Just stating that he seems to pitch better with clean innings.

If it’s a close game Ayala is gasoline.

He’s great at pitching to contact. Really, really solid contact.

Venters will be out how long?

This guy will be the 4th or 5th best option out of the Braves bullpen so it’s not like he’s being counted on for much.
