Dan Shaugnessy, Rusty Staub inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame

A guy who thinks Jack Morris, Tim Raines, Alan Trammell, and Curt Schilling were the only worthy Hall of Famers on the last ballot is now a Hall of Fame inductee himself. So too is a guy who was quite smug and pleased when no one at all was elected this past winter.  Oh, and some other guys too:

Today the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2013 inductees: popular former Mets Rusty Staub and Joe McEwing; longtime owner of the LA Dodgers Peter O’Malley; Hall of Fame baseball writer Bill Madden of the New York Daily News; and award-winning columnist for the Boston Globe Dan Shaughnessy.

Induction ceremonies will take place at Noon on Tuesday, May 7 at Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant in New York, which is a cool place, even if they’re going to be honoring Shaugnessy.

There’s an Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame?

    Umm…..why?

    • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:16 PM

You should remember this the next time white people get defensive when we’re talking about race in baseball.

      • southpaw2k - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Yeah, but in cases such as those, I think most white folks say something like, “Well you don’t see an Irish American Hall of Fame around, now do you???”

        So much for that counterargument.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:23 PM

        Exactly my point.

My write-in campaign for Bake McBride fails again.

….as did my Sam “Mayday” Malone. Dude could deal before he crawled in the bottle.

Craig–Your post’s title mentioned Shaughnessy and Rusty Staub. Then your first paragraph mentioned specifically two people without using their names. It sounded like Shaughnessy and Bill Madden, but I had to follow the links to prove it to myself. Based on the title, it would have been easy to assume one of the two was Staub instead of Madden.

I have this sudden urge to punch Shaughnessy in the face because he looks like a demented Ronald McDonald in that photo. Should I get help?

    • paperlions - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:06 PM

      Nah, that’s a normal response.

    • Ralph - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Everyone feels that way when they see (or read) the CHB.

    • rbj1 - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:18 PM

Only get help if you don’t have an urge to punch Shaughnessy in the face. And it should be a constant urge, not sudden.

      • blacksables - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Real nice, guys. Advocate violence because you don’t like his opinions.

I guess there isn’t enough stupidity in the world for you already.

      • zzalapski - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Lighten up, Francis. Like anyone here actually thinks taking a poke at him is worth a visit to the precinct.

      • Old Gator - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:09 PM

You sound like you’re perfectly capable of punching that putz in the nose by yourself.

Quick! Someone call Batman, the Joker is on the loose and he forgot his makeup…oh wait, that’s just Shaughnessy.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:49 PM

For his sake, I hope he’s a really, really nice guy, very funny, or extremely wealthy.

  6. Old Gator - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:11 PM

Craig, would you explain to me why, given a choice between publishing a thumbnail of a terrific ballplayer and master chef, or a loudmouthed, rabble-rousing semi-literate schmuck, you chose the schmuck?

    • danielponce - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:40 PM

man WHAT is your DEAL with loudmouthed, rabble-rousing semi-literate schmucks??

    • badintent - Apr 18, 2013 at 12:30 AM

You still mad after 70 years at the rabbi that cut your foreskin off ? Dang.

    Nice perm, dude.

    • mybrunoblog - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Awesome guy perm. Too bad this isn’t 1983.

  8. giantssb42champs - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:45 PM

    Who is Dan Shaugnessy?

    • bravojawja - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:30 PM

The better question is “Why is Dan Shaugnessy?”

      • jwbiii - Apr 17, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Or “Why would the patrons of Foley’s want to look at a picture of Dan Shaungessy?”

  9. drpaisley - Apr 17, 2013 at 8:44 PM

What about Jose O’Quendo? Is he in yet?

    • jwbiii - Apr 18, 2013 at 2:20 PM

      Tony O’Suna?
