Fan throws peanuts at Brandon Inge, almost starts fight

Apr 17, 2013, 1:20 PM EDT

Detroit Tigers' Brandon Inge horses around during their MLB spring training workout in Lakeland, Florida

Brandon Inge is trying to make his way back to the majors with the Pirates by playing at Triple-A and last night he almost got into a fight with a Toledo Mud Hens fan throwing peanuts at him.

John Wagner of the Toledo Blade sets the scene:

According to eyewitness reports, in the early innings of the contest the unidentified fan was throwing peanuts at Brandon Inge, who spent significant time with both the Detroit Tigers and Hens.

Before the fifth inning began, the fan came to railing on the far side of the Indianapolis dugout and exchanged words with Inge. A number of Inge’s teammates came to his defense, with several attempting to jump the railing that separated them from the fan. The fan was escorted out of the ballpark but attempted to throw beer on the Indians before leaving.

Toledo is the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate and Inge played there in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2011, and 2012. You’d think maybe all that time in Toledo playing for the home team would make him immune to peanut targeting, but I guess not.

Is there a Brandon Inge makes a ridiculous face photo shoot every year?

    • thomas844 - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:17 PM

He is opening his mouth to catch the peanuts

      • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:26 PM

And he probably made an error. :(

      • stlouis1baseball - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:20 PM

Yeah…but he has one hellava peanut throwing arm. Dude can fire it.

Maxwell Q. Klinger has always been a rabble rouser.

  3. Innocent Bystander - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:29 PM

This is only acceptable fan behavior if Inge is allergic. Then we have to pretend it’s a good job of fans doing research ahead of time for their taunts. See: Duke basketball

    • brewcrewfan54 - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Duke basketball fans are the worst.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:30 PM

Ironically, I just got a tweet from the Tigers’ twitter account that 4/28 is Peanut Allergy Friendly Day at Comerica Park. I am completely serious.

Wait a minute! That sounds really familear. Was historiophiliac anywhere near the vicinity? She’s throwing stuff all the time, and for some reason I think she has reason to dislike Inge…

    • dluxxx - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:50 PM

Familiar. You’d think an English major would be able to spell a little better. Edit function?

    • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:20 PM

      Awww, busted.

There’s a bunch of snitches in this group. Worst gang ever.

      • Alex K - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Not all of us are snitches. In the (paraphrased) words of the great poet Cam’ron

“If I found out my next door neighbor was a serial killer I wouldn’t snitch…I’d just move.”

      • El Bravo - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Cam’ron always knows what to say.

The moment I saw this headline, I knew it was you.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:28 PM

        :D

This story is plain nuts! You could say it has legumes. I just hate to see anyone get a-salted — it’s not like he got shelled.

    (Don’t roast me.)

    • sumerduckman - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:13 PM

I won’t roast you. You’ll have to do butter than that.

    • billyboots - Apr 18, 2013 at 8:56 AM

Brandon Inge is nuts about baseball!

  6. rbj1 - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:14 PM

Bizarre. I’ve been attending about a dozen Mud Hens games for nearly 10 years now. Never seen anything like that. In fact, for a large part of the fan base, the game is secondary. They’re usually on their cell phones talking to friends who are sitting in other sections. Drives me nuts.

  7. chicitybulls - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:15 PM

So the fan had beer. Partially explains his behavior although he probably is a d-bag without the beer.

  8. kalinedrive - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Hey, I hated watching Inge swing at pitches that bounced in the left-handed batter’s box as much as anyone, but Brandon Inge is tougher than you so don’t throw stuff at him.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:48 PM

      Booooo!!!

      /throws non-incriminating peanuts

  9. tolbuck - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:10 PM

When I read this I thought typical Toledo. What happened at the ballpark was nothing compared to what happened at the arena after the Walleye were eliminated from the ECHL playoffs last night. Quite a few fans were chucking debris on the ice, aiming for the ref and the Cincinnati Cyclone players.

The Hens were selling combo tickets so fans could see both the baseball and hockey games. (The Hens own the hockey team.) I wonder if the ejected fan had a combo ticket and walked to the arena to join the hijinks?

Those dang Philly fans. Always doing something stupid….. wait… what?….. this wan’t in philly? I guess fans all over the country can do stupid things.

  11. thegreatstoneface - Apr 17, 2013 at 8:43 PM

well, obviously, brandon inge felt insulted when the fan told him he ought to be willing to play for peanuts…

  12. joerymi - Apr 17, 2013 at 10:06 PM

I get that it is hard to give up the game you love, but he is a guy with little chance of making it back to the bigs. Granted, the Pirates might be worse than I think. Can’t imagine he doesn’t want to ride off in the sunset.

He has career earnings of $40.2 Million, has an All-Star appearance, and should have won the ’05 and ’06 gold glove. A career that went sour to the fans largely due to a franchise hanging on to a player for personality over ability.

But all that aside, drunk assholes in stands are a plague.

  13. scoocha - Apr 18, 2013 at 11:23 AM

    Headline should probably read:
Fan throws peanuts at Inge, Brandon almost gets knocked out.

I doubt he’s tougher than most. Terrible major leaguer though.
