When last we checked in on Jose Valverde the 35-year-old former closer was dominating Canadian teenagers, but Jason Beck of MLB.com has an update.

Beck reports that Valverde is now done with extended spring training and is expected to move up to Single-A this weekend. And if that goes well he’d likely head to Triple-A at some point next week, putting him in position to rejoin the Tigers’ bullpen at any time.

After failing to generate any big-league offers all offseason Valverde came back to the Tigers on a minor-league contract two weeks ago. For now manager Jim Leyland has decided on Joaquin Benoit as the primary closer, but if Valverde does rejoin the bullpen it’s hard to imagine him not getting a chance to reclaim ninth-inning duties.

I can’t wait for Valverde to be reunited wit Leyland. Be nice to heal that broken heart.

You’re story’s so touching, but it sounds just like a lie. Straighten up and fly right.

By the by (that’s for you, blue), we now begin our countdown. Twelve days until the deadline on V-Wiggle’s contract. If we can hold out that long, dude is FA again. Stay strong, DD!

I don’t know who first had this news tidbit, but I heard it on the Tigers April 16 telecast. Anyone who first reported it today definitely didn’t get the scoop.

It doesn’t state spesifically which Single-A team he’s going to. I assume it’s Lakeland, but just wondering if they’d send him up north to the Whitecaps to get used to the Michigan weather.
