Padres CEO blames Zack Greinke for his own broken collarbone, calls him “Rain Man”

Apr 18, 2013, 8:55 AM EDT

?????????????????????????????????????????

Stay classy, San Diego.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! reports that, the day after the Padres-Dodgers brawl, Padres President and CEO Tom Garfinkel told Padres season ticket holders that Zack Greinke was to blame for is own injury, saying that Greinke threw at Quentin on purpose and that he shouldn’t have put his shoulder down when the much larger Quentin rushed at him.  Oh, and then this:

“He threw at him on purpose, OK?” Garfinkel told an estimated crowd of 40 or 50 at Petco Park on Friday, a day after the fight. “That’s what happened. They can say 3-and-2 count, 2-1 game, no one does that. Zack Greinke is a different kind of guy. Anyone seen ‘Rain Man’? He’s a very smart guy.”

Which is apparently a dig at Greinke’s well-known history with social anxiety disorder. Passan notes that Garfinkel has apologized for that comment.

The audio of Garfinkel being a knucklehead is here.

so Clayton Kershaw and don Mattingly, can call Quentin an idiot, and that’s fine, everybody even agreed, but if garfinkel, who isn’t the owner by the way, can say greinke is smart, and he is am asshole, get over yourself dodget fans. it was a poor choice of words I agree, but c Mon get over it. greinke plunked Quentin, then instigated the situation, he eve. admitted, that he should’ve warned Ellis that him and Quentin had beef. its not Carlos Quentins fault that you guys paid 140 million to a fragile little man, who’s ego got him injured.

Well done. Learning a second language, colloquialisms and all, is not easy. Just brush up on that punctuation and spelling and The English Language is YOURS.

    • stlouis1baseball - Apr 18, 2013 at 2:35 PM

      Who is Ellis?
And for that matter…why would he care if Greinke and Quentin broke bread together?

    • frankjc81 - Apr 19, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Padre fans are just plain stupid. Simple as that. How did zack instigate the situation. Carols got hit and actually took a couple steps out to the mound. That is when zack came off the mound and said something. If carlos just took his base like a man then there would have been no situation. Look at youk when he got hit practically in the head by a pitcher who just served a suspension for hitting people in a 8-0 game. Youk took his base like a man. Anybody blaming grienke in this situation is exactly the problem with this country. People placing blame instead of taking responsibility. Other pitchers have hit carlos more times so does that mean he will charge all those guys when they hit him again? See padre fan this is exactly why you guys finish last year after year after year. Your team is a Busch league bunch of jokes and your front office/management is no different. You will always be losers competing for worst team in mlb because of people like Quentin and garfinkel. The lack of simple baseball iq on this team is crazy. It’s like a perfect team of morons. They all found a home in San Diego. Crazy really.

“Stay classy”? Why– because he told the truth?

    • richyballgame - Apr 18, 2013 at 2:47 PM

I’m not sure why people are still talking about this, but I will say that the Padres and Quentin have become villainized by the baseball world.

      • rohlo - Apr 18, 2013 at 4:55 PM

not to mention the dodger fanbase acts as if no dodger has ever started a brawl or rushed the mound… milton bradley ring a bell? what about chan ho park starting a brawl with the angels years ago and then he pulled a karate chop drop kick “with spikes on his shoes” along the first base line. but no lets vilanize quentin because we are the dodgers and we can do no wrong and we gave a special needs little pitcher 147 million….

    • frankjc81 - Apr 19, 2013 at 7:26 PM

Thanks you being a example of “stay classy” lol idiot

      • frankjc81 - Apr 19, 2013 at 7:49 PM

A special needs pitcher? What’s sad is that you are making fun of a guy who is making more than the padre team combined. How much do you make a year by the way? Wait no job? Living in parents basement. That explains it. I can’t believe how stupid padre fans are. Really. Calling a top 5 pitcher in baseball “special needs” because of an anxiety disorder. Wow. Plain stupidity. Have fun finishing in last. Again. Year after year while we contended for a title, padres are contending for the worst record in baseball. Good luck again this season padres. Hahaha

If Zach is so smart, which I agree with…. Then there is no way in a 1 run game he hit him on a 3 2 count….

He knows there would be better opportunities to drill him …. If he wanted to. Same division, and ample opportunities.
This was not the situation he was looking for.

    Just the facts.

    • frankjc81 - Apr 19, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Exactly. He had the whole game to bean that fat a$$ excuse of a ball player. But yea zack will wait for a 2-1 game with a 3-2 count in the 6th. This is the kind of thinking that will continue to keep the padres battling for worst record in mlb year after year.

  5. koufaxmitzvah - Apr 18, 2013 at 3:24 PM

San Diego has always possessed an inferiority complex over Los Angeles. They blame their smog on Los Angeles. It ought to be embarrassing for any clear thinking individual from San Diego.

Trash talking white collar types. Well, now I know where greysolon gets his talking points.

    • greysolon - Apr 18, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Tell ya what… If you are this obsessed with me, I can FedEx my jock to you so you can sniff it in person, every day, all day.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 18, 2013 at 7:11 PM

        Exactly my point, Little Fella.

Send me that jock strap. My neighbor’s chihuahua is looking for a pillow.

That is, if you can make it out of your parent’s basement to the post office.

not to mention LA tries to lay claim to so many athletes that are from san diego.. (marcus allen, reggie bush, bill walton, adrian gonzalez even on the news they tried to say southern californias marshall faulk when in fact he went to san diego state but is from louisiana.LA media never acts of san diego i nthe south land, but when they wanna try and claim someone they do. lmao

      • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 18, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Maybe if San Diego had real teams with real owners they could keep their real athletes.

It’s like shooting fish in a barrel with you two clowns.

      • badintent - Apr 18, 2013 at 7:44 PM

        @koufax
Like LA has a NFL team ? right . How do you spell Los Angles sports fans ? BANDWAGON PARASITES !

      • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 19, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Sorry, Baddie. The people of LA aren’t willing to pay for billionaires to build stadiums in their city. I know it’s hard to understand. Y’know, since you’ve proven yourself as a Sheeperson.

Maybe your handle should be Bahhhhhh Intent? I mean, yer shur smert enuff.

Anyway, Clowns, it sure looks like you lived up to my original point, which is that San Diegans possess an Inferiority Complex towards Los Angeles.

So flex those muscles and get mad while standing in front of a mirror! And if you’re greycolon, that means you’re naked and playing with a 2 inch dangle.

Gee, whodathunk that after sweeping the Dodgers in LA ya’ll would be extolling the virtues of absolute idiocy?

How utterly unsurprising on HBT– no talk about The Sweep.

  8. calicokiller49 - Apr 18, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Ellis is the Dodgers catcher, and the catcher is supposed to be the peacemaker, and sorry about my grammar, to whoever that was, but I haven’t mastered typing on my phone, I am out and about not just sitting at home combing through sports blogs, just so I can criticize people’s spellina.d whatevet

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 18, 2013 at 9:24 PM

      Grammar police are insidious.

  9. ILoveBaseball - Apr 18, 2013 at 4:58 PM

I’ll start from the assumption that Greinke told the truth when he stated he did not throw at Quentin. Violence has no place in baseball. Period. If the ramification of Quentin’s charging the mound is the loss of Greinke’s services for some period of time then whoever is on the hook to pay for those services (Dodgers? Insurance?) should be able to recover that loss from Quentin. If people were held accountable in a meaningful way for shit like this it would stop.

I have heard of a 5 tool player….now I heard a 1 tool GM. Or is he just a TOOL?

    • gloccamorra - Apr 19, 2013 at 12:28 AM

It says CEO in the post title. not GM. Garfinkel runs the business side, not the team.

  14. vicvega422 - Apr 18, 2013 at 7:43 PM

You people are too sensitive, really don’t see the big deal…. Besides, Greinke is more ” Forrest Gump”.

  15. jimeejohnson - Apr 18, 2013 at 9:18 PM

All you have to do is think of which side the great and insane Pete Rose would take in this argument about who is to blame for the injury, excluding those from Cincinnati and thereabouts, and you realize who was really wrong. Not a fan of Los Angeles, but…

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 18, 2013 at 9:23 PM

That’s should be in the HOF Pete Rose to you all. I could be biased, considering I saw Pete play this game for about 20 years. Pete Rose was as Ty Cobbish as it got; he would take you out in a second if challenged. Ask Bud Skinny Bones Harrelson: he’ll tell you.

  16. joewilliesshnoz - Apr 19, 2013 at 9:27 PM

This guy is a real dickhead.
