Jose Valverde will join the Tigers on Wednesday and serve as their closer going forward

Apr 23, 2013, 8:14 PM EST

Here’s the confirmation from the Tigers’ official Twitter account:

Valverde was a mess in last year’s playoffs, drew very little interest on the free agent market this winter and has not appeared above High-A ball since signing a minor league contract with the Tigers on April 4. But none of that apparently matters to Leyland and the Tigers. Joaquin Benoit will return to a setup role.

Jobu, why have you forsaken us?

      • cur68 - Apr 23, 2013 at 11:09 PM

I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow, noone said a word about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:44 PM

      • paperlions - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:51 PM

This isn’t my fault…I am just reveling in the memory of a fantastic dog (whose official name was “José Tigre”.). I am sure JT is looking down from heaven and wagging his tail.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:53 PM

I don’t know how you sleep at night, troll. >:(

AND it killed my buzz. Gah.

      • paperlions - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Mostly, I sleep with a tiny rat terrier under the covers and a lug of an Australian shepherd at the foot of the bed (the best place to look out the window for squirrels, turkeys, and deer). It is pretty comfortable, actually.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:58 PM

        Heartless and cruel you are.

        Pbbblt!

      • paperlions - Apr 23, 2013 at 9:00 PM

…and buzzed, thanks to a double vodka martini.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Well, I WAS buzzed from my martini but that’s gone now. ARGH!

      • paperlions - Apr 23, 2013 at 9:03 PM

        Well then….time to double down.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 9:05 PM

        I need a bartender for that. :(

Man, my day started well…and then it went to shit about 5:00.

If his splitter is back, as has been said based on his work in the minors, then he’s closer to the guy that was 49 of 49 in 2011 than the trainwreck of 2012 playoffs where he was only throwing fastballs at 92….

That said, Rondon was called up yesterday and we’ll likely see him get some high leverage innings sooner than later as well, if Smokey’s track history holds…

Benoit and Coke back to setup and Loogy, with Al-Al in setup/emergency closer and Rondon working his way in is a lot better situation than everyone out of role as was going on.

Don’t sleep on Villareal either….he will get somethings worked out at AAA and has the power arm to be a useful setup guy…

Me likey. Maybe not every night, but as a plan? me likey.

    • proudlycanadian - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:27 PM

      Was that “spitter” or splitter”?

      • historiophiliac - Apr 23, 2013 at 8:47 PM

        It was “glitter.” :(

  11. jonrox - Apr 23, 2013 at 9:51 PM

    wat

  12. 13arod - Apr 23, 2013 at 10:06 PM

i trust jose but that closer prospect that got called up needs to close

  13. joerymi - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:10 AM

My theory WAS that they signed him to a minor league deal to light a fire under Rondon. Now my theory is that Leyland threw enough temper tantrums behind closed doors.

I am not going to say I like it, but hell, maybe his age 35 season looks simialar to another former Tigers closer that now plays in Tampa. I am not counting on it, but Valverde’s career numbers are actually pretty decent. And as awful as his 2012 playoffs were, it isn’t why the Tigers lost the World Series, it just isn’t.

I don’t like it, but this still looks better than overpaying for Rafael Soriano.

  14. elwaysmilehighdenver - Apr 24, 2013 at 6:09 AM

Valverde MUST have some old black & white photos of Leyland that were going to be published.

  15. Panda Claus - Apr 24, 2013 at 9:05 AM

It’s not the playoffs yet, so why all the worry?

  16. Minoring In Baseball - Apr 24, 2013 at 5:51 PM

So. Like he’s gonna make the Tigers’ bullpen any worse? Really?? Until the offence wakes up nothing really matters at this point.
