Justin Verlander leaves start with cracked finger skin

Justin Verlander exited this afternoon’s start against the Royals after seven innings with what the Tigers announced as cracked skin on his right thumb.

Presumably “cracked skin” is better than a blister, although I’m not smart enough to necessarily know the difference in terms of a recovery timetable and either way it could be an issue for his next start.

For now he’s being listed as day-to-day. Before leaving Verlander allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking one on 96 pitches. He ERA this season stands at 1.95.

Soon we will see pitchers leaving a game because they chipped a nail

    • El Bravo - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Wow, it actually sounds like you think Verly is being a wuss.

      • thomas844 - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:05 PM

The wording of it is just humorous to me, I guess. This is the first time I have heard of “cracked skin” being a reason for leaving a game. That one dude from Houston dislocated his pinky and still pitched. No offense to JV though, I love the guy and I’m not even a Tigers fan.

All I know is that skin and finger are worth mad $$.

    • darthicarus - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:09 PM

I mean when your job is to grip a baseball with quite a bit of effort & throw it 94+ mph and the skin on your finger is splitting apart I’m sure he would be just fine considering it would be against the rules to put any sort of band-aid, sealant, etc. on it.

      thomASS844 you’re an a$$hole

      • thomas844 - Apr 25, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Lol how cute. Isn’t it past your bedtime, little guy?

OT, Kenny vs. Harrelson coming up very shortly

  3. yankeesgameday - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:28 PM

I REALLY misread that headline. I thought he had to leave the game because of a cracked foreskin.

    • indaburg - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:34 PM

It would serve him right, no?

      • historiophiliac - Apr 25, 2013 at 6:29 PM

        NO! >:/

      • indaburg - Apr 25, 2013 at 6:52 PM

        Karma, baby.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 25, 2013 at 7:45 PM

See if I root for the Rays again. Humph!

      • indaburg - Apr 25, 2013 at 8:39 PM

I’m sure Verlander’s foreskin is just fine. His bullpen, ai ai ai. Holy meltdowns, Batman.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 25, 2013 at 8:40 PM

Pssst. Did you get ahold of any of the Wilsonix?

    • sarcasticks - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:43 PM

He could have cracked his foreskin and his finger skin in the same “incident.”

  4. sarcasticks - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I think the PR people were actually trying to macho-up the situation by calling it “cracked skin.” Fail…

The real story is the royals won and are still in 1st. Go Royals go.

    • sportsdrenched - Apr 25, 2013 at 4:59 PM

      This is a fact.

I’m not even sure how to comment on the Royals when they’re doing well. All I know is, a 4-3 roady through ATL-BOS-DET is good sauce. Winning an ace-on-ace game is also a step in the right direction. They haven’t been good at doing that.

Now it’s time to come home and win some more games.

    • dtownbeatdown - Apr 25, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Highly doubt it lasts! Enjoy it while you can though.

    • El Bravo - Apr 25, 2013 at 5:09 PM

The Royals are also at the top at this time of year!

    Is a bloodball a pitch?

  7. tfbuckfutter - Apr 25, 2013 at 5:12 PM

Verlander….listen… have a couple bucks in your pocket now….go to Bed, Bath and Beyond, and invest in some Burt’s Bees.

They even send you 20% off coupons if that helps.

Time to start using a little lotion. It’s been raining a lot in the midwest lately but apparently dry skin is still a problem.

Seriously, I’m not making fun of anyone. Take good care of your skin, especially that which is your money maker.

    • tfbuckfutter - Apr 25, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Bill Burr explains the importance of lotion.

I didn’t watch it (I saw it during his special) but I going to ASSUME there is NSFW language involved.

      • bfunk1978 - Apr 25, 2013 at 6:28 PM

There’s a little but man that was funny

  9. proudlycanadian - Apr 25, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Despite the injury. Verlander pitched well. Unfortunately, the bullpen faltered as Rondon gave up the tying run and Coke registered his third loss of the season.

I wonder what Rob Dibble thinks about this?
