Victor Martinez knows when he’s out

Apr 25, 2013, 8:52 AM EDT

Former catcher Victor Martinez is not about to cause a collision when there’d be no damn point to it:

That play came after Tigers third base coach Tom Brookens decided to send the less-than-fleet-footed Martinez home with Jeff “I have an amazing freakin’ arm and I’m not afraid to use it” Francoeur fielding the ball in right. So, really, Martinez’s decision was the best one anyone made here.

It’s like Homer trying to enter the Stonecutters meeting for the first time.

      No Homers allowed.

        We’re allowed to have one.

For a guy coming off a serious knee injury I approve of Victor’s approach…and when did Gene Lamont start coaching 3B again?

The relevant fact here is that it was Sally Perez there at homeplate. He’s roughly the size of a dumpster. VMart isn’t little (6’2″, 210) but he’s just back after a long injury lay off and probably the notion of colliding with Sally (6’3″, 245) left him thinking “I bet I’ll fall apart like a Yugo hitting a wall”. Sally’s pretty sturdy and with all that catching gear on and its probably not tempting to try and run him over. Smart move on VMart’s part, since he was out by a country mile.

One would think at least a slide attempt so it looked like you tried.

      a) wreck recently repaired knee on collision
      b) trip on conveniently placed bat…wreck knee
      c) avoid collision, no injury to either player & concede what’s a sure out anyway continue on your season
