James Shields and Evan Longoria made nice

Apr 26, 2013, 3:02 PM EDT

Remember earlier this month when Evan Longoria said that James Shields and B.J. Upton couldn’t “shake the Devil Rays mentality” and thus strongly implied that their departure was good for the Rays? Yeah, that was kinda messed up.  As Marc Topkin reports today, however, the hatchet has been buried. Longoria reached out and apologized.

In other news, Shields’ Royals sit at 11-8 and Upton’s Braves are at 15-6. Longoria’s Rays, meanwhile are 10-12 and maybe could use a bit of their mentality at the moment.

I never was quite clear on what it was that Shields and Upton did. Was it somehow connected to tWtW?

      Pitching and defense

Exactly. Being former Devil Rays on god-awful teams meant that Upton and Shields had lifetime tWTW that were quite low. Longo was afraid they would eventually regress to their tWtW lifetime averages.

Which is very ironic, considering James Sheilds is nicknamed “Big Game”. I guess that wasn’t enough for Longo.

And yet, the two teams that now have Shields and Upton on their rosters inexpicably, and in spite of their presence, are in first place their respective divisions. The Rays? Uh…not so much. Longoria needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut.

The Rays are 0-5 when David Price starts. Don’t expect that stat to hold up much longer. Moore is unhittable, giving up 10 hits in 26 IP. Alex Cobb is in beast mode. Fauxsto has looked great too, with an excellent K%. They have homered in 11 straight games, and Longoria is healthy and had a 12 game hitting streak snapped yesterday.
The Rays have the best 3-4 hitting combination in the AL right now with Longo and Zobrist. They get Luke Scott back next week, so they can jettison Shelley Duncan. Wil Myers is a month away from batting 5th for this club. So although the offense has been week to start the year, it is not a weak offense. Desmond Jennings, Kelley Johnson, Zobrist, Longo, Myers, Scott, Joyce is a pretty good 1-7. Loney and Molina…..ugh.

10-12 is ugly, but this team is very good.

You lost me when you said Longo and Zobrist are better hitters then Cabrera and Fielder.

Yeah. It was supposed to read AL east, not AL. Probably the 2nd best in the AL behind Cabrera/Fielder. Pedroia/Ortiz and Jones/Davis are really the only other 2 that are even debatable.
