Mets-Phillies game delayed because umpire Brian O’Nora swallowed his chew

Apr 26, 2013, 7:39 PM EDT

Brian O'Nora AP

After Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick got Daniel Murphy for the second out of the inning in tonight’s affair in Queens, home plate umpire Brian O’Nora ran off the field suddenly. The Phillies broadcast suggested the ump might have been battling the flu, but it was soon reported in the press box at Citi Field that O’Nora had swallowed his chew. Yuck.

This ranks right up there among weird reasons baseball games have been delayed. Ahead of or behind the bees at Petco Park in 2009?

The Bees at Petco? That’s the best you can do, Bill?

What about earlier this year when a Nats home game was delayed because the umpires…got stuck in traffic. Now THAT’S funny!

Haha have you ever driven in DC? It makes a lot of sense

Did he give a warning before he tossed?

    Please, no deja vu!!!

    http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=320504120

“Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was ejected in the bottom of the first for arguing about a checked swing, one that his catcher tried to appeal but couldn’t because there was no umpire at third base (one member of the crew, Joe West, sat out the game with an illness).

The Phillies had other complaints, too, saying a ball hit by Carlos Ruiz in the seventh that was called foul should have been ruled fair (“I saw the replays,” Ruiz said), and that Shane Victorino should have been called safe instead of out on an attempted steal of third later in that inning.”

I’m confused? Did the Mets get to play under different rules? Were there not three umpires making the calls for/against them also?

I’m not sure how the Phillies were any more disadvantaged than the Mets because of this?

Sounds like a major conspiracy theory to me. We better get Bud on it right away.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Apr 28, 2013 at 8:51 AM

You are paranoid. Re-read my post, and switch to de-caf. Who is talking about conspiracy theories? (other than you). Last time the Phillies played with 3 umps they lost. I was hoping they did not lose again.

      • blacksables - Apr 28, 2013 at 9:40 AM

Well, what did the last game have to do with this game?

And how did 3 umps in any game determine the outcome when both teams played under the same conditions?

My point applies, whether you understand it or not.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Apr 28, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Then please explain – what is your point? And do you know what deja vu means?

Umpires getting stuck in traffic is sooooo funny

  5. kjericho43 - Apr 26, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Umps are fat f**ks, many times. (not all) They should never be a story in baseball game, but somehow they are. Why?

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 27, 2013 at 1:22 PM

Maybe because they have been part of the game since the very beginning, just like crazy opinionated fans.
