UPDATE: Kevin Youkilis sent to the 15-day DL

Apr 30, 2013, 3:09 PM EDT

New York Yankees' Kevin Youkilis stretches during MLB spring training workouts in Tampa, Florida Reuters

UPDATE: It’s official. Youkilis has been DL’d. They’re calling his injury a “lumbar spine sprain.”  Called up to replace him on the roster is Corban Joseph.

11:03 AM: Kevin Youkilis has had a bad back for a week, though he did tough it out enough to play on Saturday. Yesterday he underwent an MRI. It came back negative, but he’s scheduled to receive an epidural injection today. Jon Heyman says that the Yankees can’t wait for him to come around any longer and are likely to place him on the disabled list.

Given his recent history this can’t be terribly unexpected. Youk is hitting .266/.347/.422 with two homers and seven RBI on the season.

is that another 12 million dollars on the DL? do we have a 25 man roster there yet?

    • cackalackyank - Apr 30, 2013 at 5:59 PM

No, not yet…unless we pencil Youk in at second, or as an of/dh. If we called him a second baseman we would have a full infield on the DL, though.

      • number42is1 - Apr 30, 2013 at 6:02 PM

maybe we can move Arod to Short, Jeets to cover second and let Yook stay at 3rd and Tex at first. then we have Grandy in the outfield and Cervellie behind the plate to catch Pineda (and probably Nova) who else am i missing?

      • cackalackyank - Apr 30, 2013 at 6:05 PM

SHHHHH…two outfielders will hear about this and run smack into each other chasing a weak pop up tonight, and fillout the lineup card for the DL Yankees.

    Welcome to it, Yanks! Again.

    • badintent - Apr 30, 2013 at 6:12 PM

ortiz will be back on DL , so don’t get so snobby yet. I’m sending Ortiz a box of Tim-Bits to fatten him up

      • jimeejohnson - Apr 30, 2013 at 8:56 PM

One thing about you: your intent is consistently bad!

  3. sabatimus - Apr 30, 2013 at 11:33 AM

By the way, “Kevin Youkilis has had a bad back for a week”, eh? More like 2 or 3 years.

  4. 18thstreet - Apr 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM

The best-case scenario was to get 100 games out of Youkilis. This was inevitable.

  5. Old Gator - Apr 30, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Oh brother – is his face coming apart again? Why not just polyurethane the damned thing?

  6. deathmonkey41 - Apr 30, 2013 at 12:53 PM

The one silver lining- I will not have to hear about how they’re bringing up Ramiro Pena to replace him!

  7. randygnyc - Apr 30, 2013 at 2:05 PM

5 all stars on the DL. I’m almost positive that this must be the first time in the history of the game.

    • cba456 - Apr 30, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Last year the red sox had lackey, bailey, ortiz, crawford, and ellsbury on the DL.

      • pastabelly - Apr 30, 2013 at 2:26 PM

too bad the sox couldn’t put valentine on the dl last year as well.

      • flamethrower101 - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:52 PM

        He said 5 all-stars. You listed 4 and a right-handed Jonathan Sanchez.

      • badintent - May 1, 2013 at 2:47 AM

Those are names. Which can real ball ? maybe 3.The whole team was Mentally on the DL. And don’t blame Bobby V.No one except KFC coudl supply enough Chicken wings for all those losers.

    • 18thstreet - Apr 30, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Set aside games played — look at the rate stats:

He’s an average player when healthy. And he’s not healthy. He was All-Star quality in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Still good in 2011. It’s 2013. I don’t know who the Yankees thought they were signing, but it’s so hard to believe that they couldn’t find something better for $12 million.

    • evanwins - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Phillies last year: Utley, Howard, Polanco, Ruiz and Halladay.

  8. kjericho43 - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:19 PM

I don’t understand how this team wins ANY games. Yankees pixie dust in full effect.

  9. randygnyc - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:19 PM

Cba- I was referring to position players.

  10. uyf1950 - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:35 PM

I know some of you may be to young to remember Clete Boyer as a Yankee or may be even remember him at all. It may be time to call upon his spirit to occupy the body of whoever is covering 3rd base for the Yankees defensively . Clete was a magician with the glove and he had a nice high 300’s to low 400’s SLG%.

  11. randygnyc - Apr 30, 2013 at 3:50 PM

Ufy- nettles was a good player too

    • uyf1950 - Apr 30, 2013 at 4:01 PM

Yes he was. He came after Boyer and probably a slightly better all around 3rd baseman than Clete.

      • badintent - May 1, 2013 at 2:50 AM

Lots more HR power. I sat in the Con Edison Kids bleachers seats and he smash a huge HR in their to win the game in the 9th . The drive didn’t stop the swtichblade fight between the kids , just part of the game experinence

    • uyf1950 - Apr 30, 2013 at 4:04 PM

BTW, Clete just sounds like a cool name for a baseball player.

  12. ne1935 - Apr 30, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Gisele will not be happy. May have to sleep in maid quarters.

  13. drewzducks - Apr 30, 2013 at 4:58 PM

Corbin Bernsen was apparently too busy to dust off the spikes.

    • jimeejohnson - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:01 PM

But Charlie Sheen is ALWAYS READY…he can’t get no, satisfaction!
