Hank Conger bunted, fell down, and was safe anyway

As bad as the Angels are running thus far in the 2013 season, they’ll consider this a win. In the bottom of the eighth inning of this afternoon’s game against the Orioles, designated hitter Hank Conger identified that Orioles manager Buck Showalter’s defense was shifting against him, with the third baseman playing more towards shortstop. As a result, Conger bunted Darren O’Day‘s 1-1 offering down the third base line. Conger tripped about a third of the way up the line, but was safe anyway because it took third baseman Manny Machado so long to retrieve the ball.

Hank Conger, Maicer Izturis, and Ervin Santana for Ben Zobrist and James Shields. No really, that was actually a trade proposal reported by Ken Rosenthal last year. It’s a wonder the Rays weren’t laughing so hard that they actually hit the “accept” button.

We’ve secretly replaced the dirt between home and first with knee deep mud.

Let’s see if Hank Conger notices.

Seriously, the falling down aside, that was like watching someone run while dragging a plow.

I hope everyone remembers this the next time a player fails to run out a ground ball. Anything can happen.

It looks like he fell down because he punched himself in the head. He was kung-fu fighting himself on the way to first base!
