Play of the Day: minor league home run robbery

May 4, 2013, 11:40 AM EDT

You don’t see catches like this every day:

That’s Kirk Nieuwenhuis of the Las Vegas 51s robbing Steven Vogt of the Sacramento RiverCats. Not bad.  Not as good as this:

But not bad.

Great on both counts, but that shortstop (I think) will get an award from PETA for that one.

Unless, of course, his wife has the same recipe for game pot pie that I have:

2 squirrels, cleaned and cut into pieces

    1 small onion

    4 carrots cut into slices

    4 medium potatoes

    1 teaspoon salt

    Pepper, to taste

Boil squirrels in water until meat falls off the bones. Boil the potatoes and carrots until almost done. Boil commercial pot pie until tender. Drain the liquid from pot pie, squirrel and vegetables into another pan. Make a medium thick gravy your favorite way, using the liquid from the squirrel and the vegetables. Put meat, pot pie and vegetables into the gravy and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with salad and enjoy.

That’s why I’m voting for Nieuwenhuis for the major league All Star game (he’s on the ballot. Along with Mike Baxter. Not sure why in this digital age they can’t update the ballot with the guys actually getting the playing time for each team.)

Capt’n Kirk and Matt Den Dekker can both catch it in the outfield. Problem is they would both strike out a third of their at-bats.

That squirrel is lucky the game wasn’t in Kentucky.
