Gavin Floyd to undergo Tommy John surgery

May 6, 2013, 3:25 PM EDT

Gavin Floyd got a bunch of different opinions on his elbow injury, but the end result is the same: He’ll undergo Tommy John surgery.

And because he has a torn flexor muscle in addition to a torn ulnar collateral ligament the White Sox announced that Floyd is expected to miss 14-19 months, which is longer than the usual 12-month recovery timetable for Tommy John surgery.

That rules him out for the remainder of this season and at least the first half of next year, potentially putting his entire 2014 in doubt. Floyd is an impending free agent, so he’ll almost surely have to settle for an incentive-laden deal on the open market this offseason after being paid $9.5 million this year.

Floyd started at least 29 games every season from 2008-2012, but began to break down last year and went 0-4 with a 5.18 ERA in five starts this year before being shut down.
