The Baseball Scouts Database is really cool

May 7, 2013, 4:30 PM EDT

Randy Johnson Dbacks

That Bo Jackson scouting report from earlier today, I am informed by Larry Granillo, is from the Baseball Scouts Database at the Hall of Fame website. Which is really cool. It has a searchable database for scouting reports on any number of players. I just randomly looked up Randy Johnson’s first archived scouting report from 1985, when he was in instructional league:

“I can’t believe they haven’t ironed him out mechanically. Herky-jerky, stiff front leg and therefore erratic … he has above average velocity but nothing else …”

Well, he did look raw early. That I’ll grant.

Lenny Dykstra? “Excellent makeup.

Well then.

Yeah…but the real guage of the sites accuracy is the report on Buddy Biancalana.
I might have to look this up.

The section that Craig quotes is not even Randy Johnson’s scouting report. That part belongs to a Brian Holman. There are three reports on that page, Holman, Johnson and Leonard. And, the paragraph that Craig quotes goes on to say that most of his fastballs are straight and 83… 17 MPH gain from the minors to the majors would be a miracle.

      Blogger fail…

In the recent photograph of Lenny Dykstra that you have used, he could have used “excellent makeup”

Back in the early 80′s, Dykstra had the Boy George/Flock of Seagulls eyeshadow and lipstick look down pat.

So did we hug that site to death already, or is it just really slow and glitchy?

“I can’t believe they haven’t ironed him out mechanically. Herky-jerky, stiff front leg and therefore erratic … he has above average velocity but nothing else …”
Per the scouting report, the line above references Brian Holman, not Johnson.

Look how dirty that ball is in the picture

“he has above average velocity but nothing else ”

The site isn’t loading, but the Bo Jackson report says above average is “88-90.” Are you telling me Randy Johnson was throwing *just* 88-90 mph when this report was written? That would be a hell of a jump. Or a poor scouting report.

Lenny Dykstra is a transvestite? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Funny, I remember discussing and linking this article in the comments of the Bo Jackson article… :P

I enjoyed the ups and downs of Greg Maddux’s scouting reports.
