Victor Martinez would catch if the Tigers let him

Absent a sitcom-like case of frying-pan-to-the-head-induced amnesia, they won’t let him. But Victor Martinez would love to get behind the plate:

“Hopefully by the end of the season I’ll be able to get behind the plate.”┬áMartinez said he could catch right now if the Tigers asked him to.

“I’m pretty healthy,” he said. “That’s not a concern at all. If they need me (to catch), I’ll definitely be there. It’s not a question. It’s not a question.”

Martinez caught 26 games in 2011. And missed 2012 with an ACL. So, sure, I guess if the playoffs came and the Tigers were in need of an emergency catcher they might put Martinez back there, but I’d be utterly shocked if he actually donned the tools of ignorance for the Tigers again. Heck, even in the playoff scenario it would be sub-optimal given that it would likely cost the Tigers their DH in that situation.

Unless they played on the road in a World Series scenario.

Future headline: Martinez allows 10 SBs in 4th consecutive game.

I love that he’s wanting to play. He seems to finally be warming up with the hitting. Maybe he feels frustrated by his slow start and wants to do more. Maybe he’s starting to feel on top of the world and wants more. Either way, a hungry V-Mart is a good thing for us.

Look at it this way, Pena is hitting pretty well for a backup catcher and Avila is the incumbent starter with a history of above average offensive and defensive catching numbers… Vmart doesn’t fit in the mix back there. Besides, the Tigers lineup is so strong they could always sign a strictly defensive catcher to put into the mix should there be injury. We’ve taken the softball lineup before (see the renteria debacle) I’d rather put a real defense on the field and risk the lineup spot.

Vmart can get in the field mix at 1B. That’s about it. Let your knee heel Vmart! Free Agency will be kinder to a healthy Vmart, so it’s a win win situation for both sides.
