Must-click link: The anatomy of Bryce Harper’s swing

There’s a wonderful collaborative multimedia piece on the Washington Post website analyzing Bryce Harper‘s violent-yet-beautiful swing.

The story, written by Adam Kilgore, goes in-depth on the roots and mechanics of Harper’s swing. It includes an anecdote about how the young phenom had an important realization at about 7 or 8 years old. Yes, while most of us were watching cartoons and drinking juice boxes, Harper was thinking critically about his swing.

Kilgore’s story is complemented by a wealth of data, ranging from how Harper is pitched to his success rate against particular pitches. Finally, there’s an interesting video breakdown of Harper’s swing which shows an eerie similarity to one of the best home run hitters in history.

Tremendous work all around. Put aside 10 minutes and check it all out. It’s well worth your time.

If there’s one hitter you never hear comparisons to, it’s Babe Ruth.

    That was a sweet video.

Nothing gets me more amped up than a conversation about another man’s anatomy

Especially if it’s violent and beautiful.

    I find this utterly fascinating.

One quibble. How in the hell does someone “separate their pelvis from their hips”, that is like saying someone can separate their jaw from their mandible.

    Cool article though.

Side note: In his professional career, Harper has never faced a pitcher younger than him (in the minors or the majors)…and that probably won’t change for at least another year, maybe two. The same may also be true of Machado, who is only a few months (5 or 6, I think) older than Harper.

      Congratulations for him/them.

    That was a good read.

The story reminds me of the tales about Mutt Mantle come home from the zinc mine in the evening and throwing tennis balls to a 4 year old Mickey. It didn’t necessarily make Mickey a happy, well-rounded person but it produced a hall of a hitter.

Adam Kilgore: “Schu scanned through video and found film of Harper hitting.”

Huh? There is no film. He’s 20.

He shouldn’t be afraid to write what he really means: “Schu scanned through video of Harper hitting,” or “Schu scanned through video and found clips of Harper hitting.”
