From Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest comes word that the Rangers have placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal muscle strain and recalled top infield prospect Jurickson Profar to fill the roster vacancy.

Kinsler suffered the strain Thursday while trying to duck out of the way of a pitch during an at-bat. He’s likely to be sidelined for at least three weeks, which will give us all a nice extended look at Profar — largely considered the top prospect in the sport.

Profar was batting .278/.370/.438 with four home runs, six stolen bases and 27 runs scored in 37 games this season at Triple-A Round Rock. The 20-year-old can play either shortstop or second base.

What happens if Profar hits well? Does he go back down? Right now the Rangers have 3 players for 2 spots in the middle infield.

I don’t think it matters what he does. Elvis/Kinsler/Moreland are all playing too well – but it allows them to not have to rush Kinsler back.

But ultimately they have to make a discussion. Andrus and Kinsler are both signed long-term.

I’d imagine a best case scenario is that Profar does hit, and then gets dealt for Stanton. If ever a package were good enough for Stanton, there’s going to be a Profar type in the deal.

      N.B.

I’m not saying Profar alone is enough to net Stanton. You’d probably need 2 more B+ prospects.

So Profar, Olt, and Martin? That seems a little steep.

It is steep, no doubt. It’s what the Marlins would want for the Iron Giant.
