The Red Sox are dressing well

May 20, 2013, 3:00 PM EDT

Like a Sir

I’m sure it has zero to do with their play, but Pete Abraham of the Globe reports that, unlike in years past, the Red Sox are puttin’ on the ritz this year for road trips:

Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, and Jon Lester now dress like hedge fund managers on road trips. Ryan Dempster has custom-made suits he gets in Montreal. Jonny Gomes cleans up real nice in suits that would work in any boardroom. Mike Napoli has jackets with distinctive patterns. There are Burberry ties, cuff links and starched collars everywhere you look.

It’s a long way from chicken and beer, I guess. Maybe if the season ends poorly again some story will come out about how guys were secretly drinking malbec and eating tapas in the clubhouse.

that man knows how to wear a suit

      • jwbiii - May 20, 2013 at 7:44 PM

I don’t much like the suit and open collar look, but it works for him.

Wonder if Napoli buttons his shirt when he isn’t playing baseball or keeps the 80’s look going strong off the field

Lots kids in minor hockey we’re forced to wear suits and ties to every road game. Still goes on today in the pros. I’m somewhat surprised this isn’t more common in MLB, but good for the Red Sox.

Yeah, that was my thought. This is standard for hockey players. I doubt it will give the Sox magical powers of consistency, but it’s not like it’ll hurt either. Might as well.

Their big problem is grooming, Pedroia looks like a wolfman with those ugly beards he grows.

Carrying on the great Red Sox tradition, though he’s a more vertically challenged Jesus impersonator than Damon was.

Takes the idea of a playoff beard pretty far. Though, instead of growing out during the playoffs, he’s growing it out until they make the playoffs.

” … he’s growing it out until they make the playoffs.”

If that were the case he’d already look like he’s in a ZZ Top cover band.

I like to dump on the Red Sox as much as anyone, but in this case I disagree with you. Those Red Sox with beards are bald on top and are just compensating for the lack of hair on top.

gotta thumb their noses at the yanks somehow right? yanks are clean cut and well groomed gentlemen. thus the sox have to be the ungroomed wild woodmen.

i defend the beards cus hot damn i loves me some dirty hippy / lumberjack / crazy homeless man lookin ball players

This is probably my personal opinion, but the only people who wear suits regularly are an untrustworthy lot. Businessmen, bankers, and politicians. Not a good look to emulate.

    • Cris E - May 20, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Not all: funeral home directors, sales folk for lots of various lines and of course many folks away from work dressing up for social or religious functions where they want to look their best. But you’re right, it’s probably a personal thing. For most people in most situations a suit is a costume worn for a purpose, not a comfortable, first choice of attire.

Maybe they feel better about themselves this year – what’s wrong with that? They should.

  7. laserrocketarm31 - May 21, 2013 at 2:09 AM

What? No pictures of Dempsters custom made insanely Canadian suits? Anyone who has hung out at Wrigley before a game knows Dempster always shows up dressed to kill only in a way Dempster can.

    • jwbiii - May 21, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Dempster’s taste in menswear is. . . interesting.

      • koredan - May 21, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Wow, now that is a hockey player suit. Oh, Canada!
