The Cardinals learned today that Jaime Garcia needs what will likely be season-ending shoulder surgery. And now another starter is in trouble.

According to beat writer Jenifer Langosch, sinkerballer Jake Westbrook was unable to make it beyond 20 pitches in a bullpen session this evening because of lingering discomfort in his right elbow.

He was placed on the disabled list May 9 due to inflammation in that elbow and will presumably be examined by a joint specialist later this week.

Westbrook had a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings before going down. The Cardinals are using Tyler Lyons in his place tonight against the Padres but could turn to 2012 first-rounder Michael Wacha for the long term.

This is actually bad news. Although he is not a world beater, he does go 6+ innings virtually every time out & if the offense is clicking, the Cards have a good chance at winning. That being said, I’m excited to see Wacha though as he is a special talent. This staff reminds me of the ’69 Mets – young & very high quality.

It looks that way, but its just giving them the chance to prove how deep this system is right now. They just call the next man up and don’t miss a beat.

The Cardinals have 7 pitchers 25 yrs old or younger on the staff tonight: 3 starters and 4 relievers…and each of the relievers are actually starters moved to the pen out of necessity.

Now that there’s a long term role, is it time to unleash Wacha??

Based on his AAA performance, I don’t think he’s ready yet….plus, I’m sure he’s on a bit of an innings limit this year…no way he gets to 200. He’s working on stuff in the minors, and is still a work in progress as a starter.

It might be time to try to stretch out Roenthal or Kelly….guess it depends on how well Lyons and Gast do….each have done well so far (Gast hasn’t allowed a run until the 6th inning, and the BP screwed him by allowing every inherited runner to score, he’s pitched better than his ERA looks)…and the Cards love having lefties in the rotation.

Maybe the Almighty Chris Carpenter will have a holy epiphany and rescue the Cards once again!!!! CC….what a miracle worker he is!!!!

Don’t be a hater. Appreciate the Warrior that Chris Carpenter very much is.
