Kirk Gibson says Jeff Samardzija “should just shut the (bleep) up and pitch”

Jun 3, 2013, 11:19 AM EDT

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija and Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams got into a weird little shouting match during Saturday’s game and no one involved seems quite sure why it happened (or at least willing to say publicly).

Asked yesterday about the incident, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson praised Samardzija’s performance and called it all “part of the game.” But then Gibson told Steve Gilbert of

Whatever. He didn’t get the win did he? Maybe the next time he should just shut the [expletive] up and pitch.

“Just shut the [expletive] up and pitch” would be a good choice for the Diamondbacks’ team motto if they didn’t already have “GRIT!”

  1. unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:25 AM

It pains me to agree with Kirk Gibson, but that was ridiculous. Jeff Samardzjia is a co-bag meathead, and that little exchange was one of the dumbest things ever. It’s hard to say where exactly this lies on the co-baggery scale, but it’s up there as well. The last time I saw a baseball player yell at a base-coach from an opposing team was …. never. And I hope it never happens again.

    • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Well to be fair Jeff is a football player at heart

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:35 AM

To be smarter than fair – when’s the last time you saw a football player randomly get after an opposing team’s position coach? That’s less than no excuse.

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Ever take a look at NFL player arrests? They are not the smartest group of athletes.

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:41 AM

The national arrest rate is 4.2%. The NFL arrest rate is 2.2%. MLB is 2.0%. NBA rate is 5.1%

People from fangraphs are usually more intelligent and better versed with fact.

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Honestly it really pisses me off when people make that kind of generalization about the NFL. Talk about cherry picking.

On the whole, NFL players are smarter and less arrested than the average citizen by a wide margin. When people choose to slander them in the way you just did, it is usually motivated by some pretty ugly things. Maybe not so in your case, but I’d say 90% of the people I’ve had this conversation with were racially motivated to say the dumb shit they said. And make no mistake, you made some uneducated comments.

      • sparty0n - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Ummm, Gibson is a football player at heart. Not only was he a star WR drafted by the Cardinals, he played baseball like a football player – Thats why his team has GRIT!

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:48 AM

That’s hilarious, now lets try reality and enter in economics into the equation, why don’t you go fetch me the crime rate for people in the US who make over $300,000 a year and get back to me.

People with half a brain are usually equipped to bring better arguments than the lame one you just attempted. Or do you think crime and poverty are not linked? Better yet, I couldn’t care less what you think.

You think a heated exchange is “one of the dumbest things ever”. Like a teenage school girl you have a way with hyperbole, quick to get upset and say stupid things.

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:50 AM

“Honestly it really pisses me off when people make that kind of generalization about the NFL. Talk about cherry picking.”

        To review:

        tycobb = troll
        tycobb hates vagina.
        Don’t talk to tycobb.

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Yes because “To be fair Jeff is a football player at heart” is one HUGE troll attempt.

You types need to wipe your nose, and get on or up your meds.
“It actually pisses me off when blah blah blah”
Seriously? it actually pisses you off?
You have DEEP seeded issues that a medical professional should be a addressing, that or stay off the internetz.

Again, who knew there were sooky lil soft girls and boys that get bent over….

“To be fair Jeff is a football player at heart”

        Again, Meds, look into them

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:36 PM

Boy, I don’t know what your problem is, but if you have issues with another man on this blog, be a man about it and take him on as an equal — unless, of course, you’re so afraid of females and gay men, you’re a paranoid coward all around. But, you can save your vagina-hating insults. Isn’t any vagina on here wasting a care on you.

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:58 PM

“take him on” I stopped reading after that. Again, Meds are your friend.

      • mazblast - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:13 PM

He was a wide receiver. Most football players hold them in a regard just barely higher than that for kickers and punters.

      • trollingforjustice - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:00 PM

        does tight end count?

      • albertmn - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Me thinks that historio and tycobb both need a timeout.

I do find it odd that historio plays the “hates vagina” card, implying tycobb is gay (which is a shallow-minded insult a 13 year old would use), and then later claims tycobb is scared of gay men (likely due to his equally stupid “boys that get bent over” comment). Calling (or implying) that someone is gay as in insult shouldn’t have any place in 2013 America. But, to do so and then try to play the righteous card later by implying someone else is scared of gay men doesn’t make up for your short-sighted insult earlier.

And, tycobb just needs to settle down and quit trying to make “co-bag” happen. Stick with d-bag so everyone knows what you are talking about. Otherwise, you sound even MORE arrogant than the rest of your poorly thought out “arguments”.

      • indaburg - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:31 PM

Like your namesake, cobb, you appear to be someone with severe anger issues, quick to devolve into insults and anger when people don’t have the wisdom to agree with you. It is possible to have a difference of opinion without being a complete asshole about it. Try it sometime. It’s quite enlightening.

      • indaburg - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Albert, without context I can see why you think ‘philiac is calling cobb a gay slur. She is not. She is very GLB friendly and would never do that. She meant that cobb is threatened by those with vaginas. A misogynist. I think the right word for him however is misanthrope. Some people just don’t play well with others.

      • tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 4, 2013 at 11:30 AM

LOL Look at you at continue on afterwards with name calling. Hilarious to read how you act like your above certain things, refined, intelligent so evolved and still call people names like a 5th grader.

It’s not an act, m’dear. I am above you.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:26 PM

I really don’t know how you get gay slur from “hates vagina.” Gay men don’t hate vagina, and they don’t hate women either. There’s a world of difference between hates it and isn’t attracted to it. I don’t know where you got that opinion of gay men. None of my friends do.

      • The Goche - Jun 4, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Not the NFL, (don’t watch NFL enough to know), but I’ve seen players get into with coaches on college football sidelines at least once, and I’m pretty sure several times. Those guys were exceptions to the rule.

Real top class idiots, the kind that take headshots at defenseless receivers from behind when they aren’t even the one catching the ball.

    • brewcrewfan54 - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:40 AM

I’m trying to figue out what a co-bag is.

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:42 AM

colostomy bag. much worse and more gender neutral than a d-bag.

    • bfunk1978 - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:05 PM

I’m hoping for a Zimmer/Pedro for the new decade.

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:08 PM

As a Red Sox fan I didn’t care for Pedro tossing the lawn-gnome, but at least it was a reflex action at being charged metal-plate headfirst. But this thing is on Jeff Scrabble.

    • TestSubjekt - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:45 PM

I had to google co-bag. That’s a new one for me

Holy crap – I just peeped your blog – I watched every ep of TUF Brazil on FUEL TV. What really moved me was the way they all circled up and prayed together – it was a very very different vibe from TUF in the U.S., suffice to say.

  2. zemensd - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:26 AM

For a guy thats supposed to be so “gritty” and “old school” as Gibby is he sure loves running his mouth. Whether its about this, or how he clearly felt so free to publicly run down Justin Upton while he was putting him on the rail out of town (when no one else in baseball had a bad thing to say about him) he sure comes across as a guy that doesnt understand the very values hes supposed to espouse.

    • gbrim - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Gibson was actually very, very supportive of Upton during his entire time in AZ. Towers made it clear he wanted to shop him for a long time, but Gibson had his back. If you think I am wrong, post some links to where he, as you put it, publicly ran down Upton. Take all the time you need, we will be waiting…..

      • zemensd - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:51 AM

My bad, youre right it was Towers and other people in the organization/club house. Still odd to have that type of thing happening when your manager whos supposed to be the tone setter is so strident about doing it the right way. I still say he probably needs to shut his mouth and just manage too but everyones got an opinion.

      • zemensd - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:53 AM

That said I dont understand why an organization trades a player that good, under control, if the manager is a huge fan and wants him there.

      • djjackson81 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:08 PM

Because he was only under control for another 2 years with increase in salary ever year. They paired Justin a lot and it was back heavy contract.

    • djjackson81 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Dude Gibson supported Justin always did. Justin was dealt because he had the most value on the team to get back what the needed most left infield starter. They needed 3rd and SS badley and they also needed to address there Stike out rates. Upton and Young lead the team in SO every year along with Reynolds at 3rd. It’s a GM job to look at all the numbers especially those that were hurting the team the most. High strike out counts and runners left on base in scoring positions period. Those were 2 glowing issues holding the team back from competing. They were to dependent on the HR ball and record was reflecting the losses from the high strike outs. They needed left infielders and contact hitters less SO. KT dealt from a position of dept for a position or positions of need while cutting down the teams strike out numbers and getting most value for a guy in Upton.
As far as Jeff S. bumping his gums like he is some kind of ganster, mtf was lucky Williams didn’t ol school smack that dude in his mouth. Williams is one of the games greatest and seen it all especially the mouths of some dumb ass. Dbacks will likely back Williams up on his and send a message to Jeff next time he faces them in the batters box.

  3. tycobbfromfangraphs - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:35 AM

And Robb Stark should have just married the Frey girl

  4. trollingforjustice - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Matt Williams has earned the respect that he deserves……Samardzjia has only been around the big leagues long enough to deserve a cup of coffee

  5. windycity0301 - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Was at that game and saw it happen. I think Samardzija went high and tight on one of the Dbacks (and the hitter was complaining to the ump for an extended period about it). Frankly, his control was not there Saturday and he was losing it.
It was weird though, Williams was already near home plate, stopped and turned around to jaw back. Made no sense to any of us sitting there watching.

Frankly, I’m a fan but fully support the “just shut up and pitch”. As Crash Davis MIGHT have said to Jeff, “Until you win 20 in the show, you are just being a jackass!”

  6. Jonny 5 - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:30 PM

In that case, my wife should just shut the hell up and cook! Can somebody please tell her that?

    • djjackson81 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Another one of those guys who think a wives place is only in the kitchen. Clearly you must not understand how to handle a lady in the bed room.

      • indaburg - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:32 PM

Believe me, he was joking. His dang sarcasm font was broken.

  7. codyodea - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:08 PM

Good work here guys. A lot of quality conversation. I like the way Jeff guys out there and pitches angry, pitches with grit. I can think of a lot of jerk pitchers over the years and they didn’t wait untilll they won 20 to act like it. Gibson would like that type of player if he was on his team.

    • djjackson81 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:13 PM

No Gibson would tell his pup to shut his mouth and don’t disrespect border line hall of fame player.

  8. rcm54 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Hmmm…sounds like Williams was jawing at Samardzija and them Samardzija told Williams to KMA.

  9. Jonny 5 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Dang, just trying to lighten the mood here. – non story getting people all outraged and stuff. I can’t hit reply to people from my phone, so I’ll just thank my friend for sticking up for me here. I frequently fail at typed irony/ sarcasm.

  12. delusionalcardsfan - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Zemensd-Are you a Dback fan? Have you listened to Gibby comment on J-Up? He has always treated him with respect and never says anything negative about his prima Donna attitude or lack of effort. Even after the trade, numerous local talk shows tried to bait him into bashing him, yet he refrained. Seems like Gibby will blow his soup cooler when it’s relevant to the game, not to run players out of town. Kevin Towers does that on his own.

All false. Gibby had good things to say about J UP. Radio, tv, and interviews. Kevin Towers on the other hand….. Poo on this comment
