Four Houston firefighters died in a horrible fire on Friday. Per the Houston Chronicle, the Astros are honoring them with a special patch this week, will also hold a moment of silence tomorrow night and will be offering local and national firefighters and their families free tickets to games this coming homestand. The statement from team president Reid Ryan:

“Our prayers go out to the families and friends of the firefighters who lost their lives or were injured in last week’s tragedy,” Astros president Reid Ryan said. “We all owe a debt of gratitude to all of our firefighters, who risk their lives to keep others safe.”

Nice move.

(thanks to Wes N. for the heads up)

While it can’t change what happened its a pretty cool thing for the Astros to do. Anything to help victims friends and families for a couple minutes at least.

Definitely a cool move by the Astros. They might want to keep the free tickets for firefighters and their families on the down-low, however. Anyone who knows firefighters knows they might not actually “sell” a ticket this homestand. If it’s free, we come out in droves.

You got that right, JS. If the ‘Stros were playing my Phillies this weekend, you best believe I’d be making my first visit to the lone star state. Much respect to the ‘stros and condolences to the Houston FD and the families of my fellow fallen brothers and sister. Situations like this remind me how dangerous our job is and how honored I am to do what we do.

Best description of first responders of all types; They run toward what everyone else is running away from. Condolences and prayers to the families and friends.
