The first round of AL All-Star balloting results have been released

Jun 3, 2013, 1:38 PM EDT

2013 All Star Game Logo

Gallup has predicted that Jeff Francoeur will lead the balloting. Karl Rove says that these results are skewed. But this is what MLB has so far for the first round of All-Star balloting, with leaders by position, with vote totals:

The only close races are at first base, where Prince Fielder is about 117,000 behind Davis, shortstop, where J.J. Hardy trails Andrus by around 10,000 and the third outfield spot where Nelson Cruz trails Hunter by less than 50,000 votes. Every other race sports at least a 150,000 vote spread. Many are much greater. The entire slate of vote totals can be seen here.

That is, until the hackers wake up and start stuffing the virtual ballot box. C’mon, hackers, get to it! I want to see Derek Jeter get voted in! He only has 380,000 votes so far! That’s not enough for someone with his Will to Win, even if he hasn’t played all year.

Are AL players in the lead at every position or is this just the AL team?

    • neoshweaty - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Wow. I’m an idiot. Just reread the title. Please down vote and make fun of me as necessary.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:54 PM

I didn’t pick up on it either until I saw this reply. But that doens’t get you off the hook – for I am an idiot as well!

“The first round of AL All-Star balloting results have been released”

    • sknut - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:43 PM

      Just the AL team.

  2. goskinsvt - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:43 PM

How in the world is Brian Roberts #5 in 2nd base voting? He has 12 ABs this season…

    • mrjavascript - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:53 PM

Derek Jeter has more votes as the #5 shortstop and has yet to appear in a game this season.

    • bmorelikeme - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:54 PM

Thats just what happens when you let public masses vote, they make uneducated decisions.

      – Insert politically charged joke here –

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Well, you sure wouldn’t want Barnabas Selig selecting the teams.

    • Glenn - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Maybe the guys who voted for Palmeiro for that Gold Glove voted for him.

  3. jdl1325 - Jun 3, 2013 at 1:53 PM

Surprisingly not a bad first run by the fans. Only real glaring leader is Torii Hunter.

    • southpaw2k - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Meh…it’s not like Hamilton, Granderson, or Bautista are more deserving than Hunter. Maybe Alex Gordon, but that’s debatable.

      • paperlions - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Bautista is having a far better year than Hunter is….as is Gordon, and Trumbo, and Nava…and a lot of other guys.

      • thebadguyswon - Jun 3, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Gordon is a fantastic player and twice as good as Torii Hunter is right now.

  4. historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Well, except for Andrus and Mauer, I’m okay with that list.

    • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:18 PM

      What’s wrong with Mauer?

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:23 PM

I just like Wieters or Pierzynski better. That’s all.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Mauer is having a hell of a season, which is pretty much par for the course.

Wieters and Pierzynski aren’t even the 2nd best catchers in the league right now. If anyone other than Mauer should be in consideration for AL catcher it would be Carlos Santana (bat wise). Add Mauer’s excellent D and there really isn’t any question about it.

Do Wieters or Pierzynski have more personality? Yes. Would I rather have a beer with one of them? Yes. Would I rather have either of them on the Twins over Mauer? Hell no.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Ok, you can vote however you want. I don’t hate Mauer.

        Is that a cat?

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Nope, it’s my pug. She is staring longingly at a very tasty 8-Bit ale from Tallgrass brewing.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:37 PM

        Excellent taste.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:35 PM

        Mauer – .335/.417/.490 (.907 OPS)
        Wieters – .237/.297/.427 (.721 OPS)
        Pierzynski – .286/.319/.421 (.739 OPS)

Harshing on Mauer is the baseball equivilant of being a hipster.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:43 PM

It’s really an insult to hipsters to suggest I’m one of them.

BTW, you should see the team I put together for NL All Stars. 😉

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:47 PM

Eh, I live in Minneapolis, and there’s tons of them everywhere. I saw one hipster wearing a Nishioka jersy (the irony!!) and skinny jeans and I just about lost it.

Obviously I’m a little biased towards Mauer (being a Twins fan and all) but I think I would have a hard time justifying voting for someone else at this point even if I wasn’t.

But that’s the beauty of AS voting. You vote for who you like, not the best players. Right Jeter??? Huh? 😉

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:49 PM

And sorry for implying you are a hipster. That wasn’t the intention. I was just pointing out that they love lots of inferior products because it’s ironic or “cool.”

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Did you just call Pierzynski ironic or cool? lol I wasn’t offended. I just felt kinda bad for hipsters there.

I didn’t mean to bust on your Twinkies. I didn’t really make my picks based on who had the best numbers. I didn’t take it that seriously. I will attempt to pay more attention to the Twins in the future.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:18 PM

You better!!! They’re only 4.5 back right now and a series against the lowly Royals is up next. 😉 At the end of the year, I know where thye’ll be compred to the Tigers, but I’m certainly enjoying the season thus far…

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Don’t you discount those Royals now. They can surprise Verlander you.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Fortunately (unfortunately???) we don’t have anything resembling a “Verlander” on our roster at this point. I think that makes us safe, right???

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Is there an answer that doesn’t get me in trouble again?

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:48 PM

You know. I’m not sure. I was wondering about that though. It appears that one of Gator’s boo birds has attached itself to you…

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:49 PM

        Tomorrow is another day.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:52 PM

If it makes you feel any better, I voted for Miggy.

      • dluxxx - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:52 PM

If it makes you feel any better, I voted for Miggy. And Prince.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:57 PM

Now paperlions is going to yell at you.

(I think I voted for everyone on that list but Andrus, Mauer, and Ortiz. I didn’t vote for Prince. Shhhhh.)

  5. waiverclaim - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:10 PM

Youkilis has more votes than Josh Donaldson? I hate everyone kill me now

  6. Jeremy Fox - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:10 PM

+1 to Craig for the reference to the kerfuffle over bad pollsters and bad poll punditry in the last presidential election.

Does this mean we can expect references to Nate Silver or Drew Linzer in future posts?

    • petey1999 - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:48 PM

      Nate Silver is my hero.

  7. erbaodai - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:12 PM

    Jhonny Peralta snubbed.

  8. gloccamorra - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:35 PM

The vote standings must have been leaked to the clubs. That’s why we heard all this thumb business about Pedroia not long ago – to boost his vote totals.

  9. 13arod - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:49 PM

i wish they would let us pick the pitchers too

  10. dawgpoundmember - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:38 PM

I just checked the ballot, and can we get a real cause started, like have Rick Ankiel start for the AL even tho he plays for the Mets? Please?

    • asimonetti88 - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:57 PM

Jeff Franceour for the AL. Speaking of hipster.

  11. tc4306 - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:01 PM

I’m a Blue Jays fan and I’m glad Bautista is not in the top 3 OF. Only Blue Jay who deserves to be at the All Star game is Casey Janssen.

  12. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Matt Wieters is probably the best defensive catcher in the league, but his bat hasn’t come around the way it needs to. If Chris Davis doesn’t get voted in, I’m officially done with the All-Star game. I’d like to see Machado make it, but only as a backup. Although it’s a bit of a toss up between either him and Beltre, or both. (Josh Donaldson deserves some consideration aswell).

Neither Hardy, nor Andrus deserves the start over Peralta, or Lowrie.

  13. mazblast - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:16 PM

When these “hipsters” do or like something that is totally off base, they attribute it to being “cool”, or “ironic”, or my being “uncool”. What really causes it is that they have NO TASTE and are trying to cover it with attitude.
