Johnny Cueto scratched from start, placed on disabled list

Johnny Cueto was scratched from tonight’s scheduled start against the Rockies and placed on the disabled list with a lat injury, leaving the Reds scrambling to find a fill-in starter. Tony Cingrani no doubt would have been the choice after pitching so well subbing for Cueto earlier this season, but he started yesterday at Triple-A.

Pedro Villarreal will make the spot start in Cueto’s place. Villarreal made his big-league debut with the Reds in September, throwing one scoreless inning in his lone appearance. This season the 25-year-old right-hander had a 5.03 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A, serving up 13 homers in 59 innings.

As for Cueto … he has a history of lat/oblique problems, including spending a month on the DL earlier this season, and has even talked about potentially needing to adjust his mechanics to avoid further injuries. He’s been fantastic in between DL stints, going 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six starts, but if the past is any indication Cueto may not pitch again until after the All-Star break.

If Jason LaRue has been biding his time, waiting, now may be an opportune time to attack.

One of the beat writers is reporting Cueto is only expected to miss 1-2 starts.

He’s out 15 days retroactive to his last game which means 3 scheduled starts. If they mess with the rotation they might be able to get it to 2, but I have no idea why dusty said maybe only one start missed.

No, with it retroactive and tomorrow a free day, he’ll be eligible to return on what would be the third normal day. He missed this game and will miss one other.

I think all the “maybe one game” comments came before the DL move.

Obviously, he doesn’t know much about lat injuries. They linger, and given Johnny’s history, the Reds shouldn’t be in any hurry to bring him back quickly.

No Tony Cingrani on this call-up. Hmm.

He pitched on Sunday. Villarreal was the scheduled pitcher at AAA today

And that just worked out wonderfully. They better start shuffling AAA to get Cingrani on the same schedule as Cueto, I can’t sit through another Villrreal start.

He’ll miss at least 2 starts – back by ~June 15th. Good move by the reds…get Johnny healthy for the summer stretch.

Jason LaRue’s voodoo doll is working perfectly.
