The Diamondbacks drafted a paralyzed ex-Arizona State player

Jun 10, 2013, 9:22 AM EST

Cory Hahn was paralyzed from the chest down in his third ever college game for Arizona State after a horrific slide into second base back in 2011. It ended a promising baseball career, as Hahn was picked by the Padres out of high school before committing to ASU. But over the weekend the Diamondbacks gave him a nice, symbolic nod:

Tyler Lockman’s story over at Fox Sports Arizona talks about Hahn’s inspirational words as he lay on the field immediately following his injury, his recovery and the Diamondbacks’ decision to select Hahn in the draft.

Gettin’ misty in here.

Diamondbacks are a very classy bunch from top to bottom!!

Diamonbacks have a very good PR team. It’s the 34th round, so instead of picking a player that likely won’t amount to anything, you take a huge dose of positive PR.

I know I’ll get blasted for this, but whatever. I’m all for letting disabled kids run for touchdowns and hit homeruns and getting “drafted”, because they’re kids and don’t realize they’re being used as good PR so it’s a lot of fun for them. However, this guy is an adult. If they draft him, they better treat him like a player instead of a PR stunt. They better let him in and use any DBack minor league facility just like they would a player. Otherwise, it’s “hey, thanks for the good press, see ya”.

They’ve indicated they legitimately want him involved in the organization and I think they would open whatever doors they can to make him feel welcome. Obviously they didn’t need to draft him to make that offer, but it was a nice touch. He goes around and talks to high school teams and such on his own initiative so I could see him having some sort of role with the Diamondbacks.

The story I read said that the Dbacks hope to find employment for this young man in their orginization. Well done.
