David Wright and Robinson Cano named captains for next month’s 2013 Home Run Derby

Jun 11, 2013, 8:25 PM EDT

Major League Baseball is doing that thing again where they pick an American League and National League captain for the Home Run Derby and then let those captains round up a team of competitors. That system got Robinson Cano booed last year in Kansas City because he did not select host city favorite Billy Butler as one of the American League batters. But there will be nothing of that sort this year at the Mets’ Citi Field because David Wright is already signed up. Here’s the promo poster from MLB’s official Twitter feed:

This year’s Home Run Derby will take place on July 15. The 2013 All-Star Game is the next night, July 16.

Looks like MLB is trying to shoehorn the Yankees/New York angel into the ASG.

    • dondada10 - Jun 11, 2013 at 8:31 PM

      Angle. Don’t smoke and post.

    • ezthinking - Jun 11, 2013 at 11:06 PM

      ummmmm….duh.

i really would like to see matt joyce in a homerun derbey

      — as long as Lackey is his designated pitcher.

You think the Yankee fans will boo Cano if he doesn’t select local fan favorite Pronk?

  4. Kevin Gillman - Jun 11, 2013 at 8:55 PM

I know Cano won’t select him, but Mark Reynolds would have a field day there if he was chosen.

    Who cares

  6. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jun 11, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Always more entertaining than the game itself, though neither is exactly must-see TV.

  7. historiophiliac - Jun 11, 2013 at 9:15 PM

    I hope Cano’s dad doesn’t throw a no-hitter again,

  8. 13arod - Jun 11, 2013 at 9:23 PM

“Robinson Cano booed last year in Kansas City because he did not select host city favorite Billy Butler …”

And he’s still being booed this date. Very classy KC.

Ironically, neither of these guys are classic HR types. But, .. it’s the ASG so does that really matter?

    • ctony1216 - Jun 12, 2013 at 8:22 AM

KC fans harassed Cano’s family too. If I were the type of fan who boo’ed, I’d boo those KC fans.

      • tophawk38 - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:18 PM

Screw Cano. All star game is for the fans and 45,000 fans packed that place thinking Butler would be in it because Cano said he would pick him. Cano is a liar. It was hilarious how he sucked. Don’t give me the fans harrassed his family crap, yank fans are well known for harrassing the families of players on other teams.

For the record, Cano was booed in KC because he originally said he would pick Butler but lated reneged on that promise.
If he had not opened his hole, he would not have been booed.

    • bigharold - Jun 11, 2013 at 10:43 PM

He decided to not choose a non-home run hitter for the HR Derby and he was wrong??

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that Jose Bautista, Prince Fielder and Mark Trumbo were better options.

Just cause Butler was the KC DH doesn’t make him a HR hitter. And, it was the HR Derby.

      • geoknows - Jun 12, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Butler would have been a perfectly acceptable choice. And, as noted above, it would never have been an issue if Cano hadn’t said when he was named captain that he would select Butler.

      • tophawk38 - Jul 8, 2013 at 9:19 PM

Butler had more HR’s at the all-star break last year then fatso Fielder.

Is it too early for Puig to get asked, if he keeps going like he is?

    • ezthinking - Jun 11, 2013 at 11:07 PM

ask his hammy. Pulled up at first tonight. Not good.

  12. brianjoates - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:03 AM

You have to put Chris Davis in the HR Derby this season.

  13. duckthefodgers - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Am I alone in wanting to see Giambi in it?

  14. stevequinn - Jun 12, 2013 at 6:53 AM

The HR derby is a waste of time. It’s nothing more than giving ESPN another night of trash sports to broadcast. And another agonizing period of listening to Chris (The Asshole) Berman. Can there be anything in sports worse than Chris Berman behind a microphone?

    • giantsmetsfan - Jun 12, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Yes…listening to Joe Buck behind a microphone.

  15. dowhatifeellike - Jun 12, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Why don’t the two ASG starting pitchers get to pick the derby teams? They would know better than anyone.

  16. moogro - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:02 PM

    yaun

    lathered with bad breath spit

    sandpaper covered

    tumbling on Berman’s tonsils

    ashtray

  17. caeser12 - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Cano should let Phil Hughes pitch to him, he’ll hit 45 easy.

  18. Jonny 5 - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:40 PM

I’d rather see real meaningful baseball. But any baseball activity will do actually. I sometimes go to the local High school to get my fix in, so I never complain about the AS game. It’s really just an MLB money grab but I’m ok with it.
